Longstreet's Grave Site

Post by Ephrum »

One surprise my cousin had for me was that he lives only 25mins from Alta Vista Cemetery. The burial site of Gen'l Longstreet. So I had to get some pic's of the site.
It's a nice memorial site, with different family headstones in it.

Here's the family headstones.

And of course, Gen'l Longstreet's....

And this is the main monument.

Notice the cigars at the bottom of the stone.

The brochure said that people often leave cigars and whiskey in the Generals honour. We didn't see any whiskey. Besides, surely that's something being checked for, daily, by the groundskeeper(s) anyway.

Thought you guys might enjoy seeing it.

Thanks very much for the photos! Have never been able to schedule a trip in such a way as to be able to view the site. Great photos!

Hey Ephrum ,

Awesome pictures !!

The reason you did not see any whisky bottles is because JC hides behind the stones to get the bottles especially if it was this brand !!!!

Hey Chamberlain,
I was telling Sarge about the pic's on the phone, and he started laughing when I told him we didn't see any whiskey bottles there.

He said the Groundskeepers were probably a happy crew!!

He did mention Jameson in the course of the conversation. Go figure!!

Your right, it's probably him! B)

No problem Chamberlain! I'll probably talk to him this weekend. He's been working and saving to get an internet connection.

I'll tell him you said hello! B)

My mother went to collage in Gainesville, Ga in the mid 30's. One Sunday afternoon she had tea with Gen. Longstreets last wife who died in 1968. She was 21 when she married the very old Gen. in 1904/5.
My Grandfather as a young boy knew Gen Joe Kreshaw in Camden, SC. Kreshaw was one of Lee's better Div. Commanders but you hear very little of him.
