Just to throw around some thoughts after watching some college ball, it would be interesting to compare battles to football games/plays.
For example, at Gettysburg the strategic situation for Lee tells me that he was down by 6 with 2:00 left and no timeouts, but he had the ball at the 50.
He needs to score quickly, get the ball back, and score again.
First down (first day), he gets a nice 20 yard pass down to the twenty. Second and third down(second day) he hammers the ball down to the 15 yard line. On fourth down (third day), he could kick the field goal and hope to get the onsides or go for the 15 yard score.
A 15 yd TD on 4th would be tough, but he couldn´t just settle for the FG. He tries a desperate pass and it is batted away, game over.

Re: Some fun: comparing battles to football
I agree. I use a lot of the same type of design when writing sowgb as I use in strat football. It's all about little battles to win the war.

I would say that 4th down pass was picked off and returned back to the fifty, give of take.
