Cannot Talk with Registration Server! Or I Suddenly lost my Activation

Game won't run. Keeps crashing. Hopefully we won't get any posts here, but if we do, we'll try to help you out. You can also post any bugs that you find here. IMPORTANT: Don't post mod related problems here!

Cannot Talk with Registration Server! Or I Suddenly lost my Activation

Post by norb »

I just spent some hours on the phone with the guys who wrote our activation. They are very helpful and they stayed on with us until we got to the heart of the matter.

The heart of this matter is that we cannot load the activation dll. It's a very simple windows api call and it's failing. The only reason that it would fail is if the file is missing or flagged to not load by virus software. This file is encrypted so some of the new virus heuristic programs will flag it. Basically "I don't know what this is, so it's a virus!"

The quick fix is to reinstall the game. Should work fine if you do that. But it may get flagged again and you'll see the same symptoms. So in order to avoid this issue (after you reinstall) do the following:

1. add the file as an exception to your virus software
2. send the file to your virus vendor to get whitelisted
3. turn off your virus software when you play the game

If you don't know how to add it as an exception, post your virus software type here and I'm sure someone that also has it will help you. I have already submitted it to AVG and they confirmed that it's not a virus. I have run it through many virus scanners and they confirm that it's not a virus.

In the patch I will put up more specific errors to help you with this issue. You can also check to see if the file exists by going to (if you installed to the default path) c:\norbsoftdev\scourge of war - gettysburg\work\scpwin32.dll

I wish we could do more about this, but this is your operating system and it's not under our control. If we find that there is more that we can do to avoid this, we definitely will!

I uninstalled then reinstalled but didn't deactivate first. It reports my code is still active and I can't seem to deactivate it now. Can one of you guys help me with this? Can't I just get a new code without paying for it again?

The game should deactivate itself on deinstalling, but in your case the program couldn't talk with the registration server.

Just send your activation code and the email that you used to order the code to sowsupport at scourgeofwar dot com and we will reset it, so you don't need a new one.

How do you post the file using McAfee?

By the way, the file (dll) is being seen by McAfee as a Trojan, specifically
Atermis!C93E2B54FE08 (hope that helps).

I have to tell ya' Norb, it would be great if you could do copy protection some other way, such as Matrix does with a code that does not require internet access after that.

I am having too many problems with this game and the only two other games (Storm Eagle Studios') I have that cause me problems also have similar protection (although McAfee is not the problem with them).

I gave up purchasing any new games with them and really hope I don't get there with your games because, unlike them, I find you very customer focused and desirous of wanting to help your customers. Please reconsider how you do copy protection.

Please let me know if you had success with this link? Am having the same problem as you after an automated full scan by McAfee, had no problems before that.

This is the complete message.

I wish that I had McAfee. Based on what you write, I think that the problem is exactly as you describe. So I'll google for you, as it could also help others..........googling ........

Found this link community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/150 it shows how to add another program as an exception, but it should be easy to use the same info to add ours. Let me know if you have any success.

Norb

As one that has been discourged by what you discribed above, I am glad you have been most supportive in resolving the issue, thus suppressing the flames  , for I'm still not out of the woods (unable to reinstall the game), although the demo does appear with it's limitations. At the very least it has been a learning experience and I would be happy to help anybody in a similar predicament with my limited computer knowledge once I get through this ordeal (been there, done that). It's not just about the game for I do enjoy the Forum and how it is evolving as of late.

Thanks, BOSTON :)

OK, I am very confused by what I read. All that needs to be done is to open the exception list, add the dll, close it and the problem is over. This really is not our fault, if I have my program start deleting windows files are you going to call microsoft and blame them? Their detection sucks if it gives false positives, we have no control over that. But if you just add it as an exception, this problem is over. That is what is confusing, the solution takes two minutes, but we're still going back and forth on it.
