ADukes, and other modders. I need to pick your brains please.

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

ADukes, and other modders. I need to pick your brains please.

Post by Michael Slaunwhite »

Hi ADukes.

I have to say thank you very much for the program you mentioned in an earlier post, it's extremely easy to use which I am very thankful for.

I need to pick your brain here, and hopefully I can do it without looking like a fool or leaving you brain dead :) .

Okay, as you know I am trying to add a puff of blood to the game. I have come across a death scene called 'BZ_H_Inf_01-8_Death_2-1.dds' (among many other death scenes)which looks like it's the first of 3 files which shows a death scene (in this scene the character is still standing, and showing movement of being hit).

Now, I need to ask if there is a generic image that I can edit or make that would only show a puff of blood, or do I have to edit say 'BZ_H_Inf_01-8_Death_2-1.dds' to actually have the puff of blood to show up as a bullet hit?

I'm trying hard here to figure out how to explain this. Forgive me if it sounds confusing. The question is easy in my brain, trying to get it on paper is the hard part.

Cheers...

You have to edit BZ_H_Inf_01-8_Death_2-1.dds.

Thanks ADukes.

Excellent! I figured it out before I logged back online, I'm sorry if I wasted your time ADukes.

I just want to let you know I just finished editing some death dds files, and it looks pretty good so far. The blood has to be darker, and edited a bit further, but it looks pretty cool to see the blood spurt like that (I know very morbid, but thats from years of playing too many first person shooters). I'm also going to edit the dds files that will show blood drops on the ground around the dead.

All in all I have had a very productive day. I guess I won't see much sleep tonight since I now know I can do this.

Thanks again ADukes for your help, and for pointing me to a great editing program. It works like a charm.

Cheers...

......if I were doing this in PhotoShop, mikesla, I would create a new transparent layer, do my bloodwork, then automate the transfer to all the other infantry death files.

I'm sure you'll know it when you see it, it'll be a hot topic.

I know that beggars can't be choosy, but I think if someone is going to do a blood mod, they really need to make it graphic. It needs to be to the point where you almost need a disclaimer before you play it. Blood, gore, all of that good stuff..

I was once in a forum discussion; "Someone needs to make a Civil War movie as accurate violence-wise as Saving Private Ryan". One guy said that nobody would go and see it.. If they could accurately portray the effects of canister on the human body, no one would be able to stomach it..

That would be very disturbing to watch.

There are actually blood splats in the original scenes I made - sadly they didn't really show up when rendered but I think you can see some at times. I did 3 different death animations for each uniform but due to memory limitations we only used one per uniform.

Hi.

I hope I'm not stepping on your toes Tim, that's something I'm not wanting to do. I just thought I would edit the files for my own personal use, and to see what I could come up with.

I started to do some crude edits, trying to figure out which would be the best route to take, and how much I can add to the unit sprite before I start affecting the fps.

I'm also thinking to have the player see arms/heads getting hit, then as the death sequence continues to play out the arm, or head will go missing. With the very crude edits I have done so far, seeing a canister shot hit these men is a blood bath.

To tell you the truth, I'm a real noob here, so I'll try to get it out as soon as I see that it doesn't destroy the fps, and it looks cool.

Cheers...

I'm using a program that ADukes posted.

Gimp + DDS plugin.

www.gimp.org/
code.google.com/p/gimp-dds/

For me it's a great tool, easy to use, and very fast.

I'm looking to edit each frame individually to give a more random effect to the death scene. Mind you your idea is better if I knew what you are talking about :) .

I'm a real bonehead here. The only program I have ever used was the paint program that comes with windows, so this is new to me.

All the help I can get is really appreciated.
