Proper Grammar & Punctuation

Post by Kerflumoxed »

Good morning,

Not sure where to place this, Norb, but am hopeful that it will find the right place.

Briefly, on a personal note, I would like to witness the proper usage of punctuation, grammar and capitalization in posts. For lack of a better term, the "lazy" use of non-capitalization demonstrates a lack of "professionalism" by the writer and a disregard for the reader. Yes, it may require a micro-second more to "hit" the "Shift" key when typing, but it would greatly aid in the clarity of thought of the intended message.

Thank you for your consideration...and, again, I am not trying to step on anyone's toes.

It's the big globs of run on sentences that I just refuse to read, no caps, no space for paragraphs, incorrect or missing punctuation...spewing on and on. I peg the person as stupid, lazy or pompously doing it THEIR WAY, with little regard or thought that others have to struggle to interpret their INDIVIDUALISTIC jargon.

Oops, mentally challenged...not stupid. And I will take extra time to help these folks. :)

Shame, shame, don't be flummoxed. :)
I once had a friend in the Psych Dept. who always wrote his emails without caps. I asked him why he did that. He repied that he was just getting in touch with his inner ee cummings. He also painted his office a very bright purple. Ya gotta love those psych folks. You see Kerflumoxed, instead of denigrating those who are capitaliztion challenged, you should be encouraging the budding poetic genius yearning to get out.
I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

One of my pet expressions I use in my classes, and one that all my students associate with me, is "mental midget."

Like you, when I come to a posting with no "caps" and little/no punctuation, I just skip them. If the author does not have the time to "cap", I don't have time to read.

A famed Harvard history professor once described psychology as "...the witchcraft of the 20th century!" I always thought that was an appropriate descriptor.

I understand everyone has their pet peeves, I certainly have mine :) I rarely read posts that are in all caps or the subject is in all caps. Too much like yelling, and that's my own pet peeve :)

Hi.

I have always believed, and still do, that if anyone can get their point across without cursing, or belittling another human being, then I have absolutely no problem.

Who am I to tell another person how to speak? or how to type, or how to walk, smell, what type of clothes they should wear...get my point?

Just my piece of eight on this matter.

Just a little annoyed...

Interesting you should mention "smell."

Many years ago (I carefully avoided the number) I sat in a graduate seminar of 12 graduate students deliberating "Imperialism." One member of our group had a virulent case of B.O. At the local pub following one evening's class, I was elected (as the oldest member of the class) to speak on behalf off the other students and direct the attention of the offending class member to his lack of body hygiene. During the next week, I encountered "John" and asked him to come to my office (I was a grad assistant) for a few moments. As diplomatically as I could, I addressed the issue without degrading his problem. To my extreme delight, he profusely thanked me for the friendly conversation and said he was unaware of his unintentionally offensiveness to the rest of the class.

So, no, sorry but I do not get your point, just as you did not get my point. It was not intended to belittle or humiliate anyone, but, rather, to simply request the normal usage of the accepted mechanics of language and communication.

Again, if I step on anyone's toes, it is not my intent.
