AI not using breastworks

Post by Tankerdco »

Norb,
Just a heads up, might be a bug or messed up value somewhere but... In any scenario that includes the AI defending behind breastworks,ie..Culps Hill, the AI will move out of or away from this major defensive terrain(man made)feature. The AI seems to not understand the defensive benefit and looks to gain defensive benefits from other features or will attack forward when the advantage is clearly behind the breastworks.

I hope this made sense but,try attacking a AI controlled defender set up along breast works. You'll notice that more than 75% of the forces leave the breastwork terrain.

Which scenario have you noticed this in? If it's one of my Culps Hill scenario's (probably the Johnson one), some of the AI forces may have events that put them on Attack orders if engaged. This would cause them to be aggressive and want to move to attack instead of defending the works. There are several randoms in those scenario's.

The AI is coded to want to use defensive features as much as possible, but it's not perfect. They may stray away from it occasionally, but the code is there.

LP, yes, it is Johnson's attack on Culp's hill that made me take notice of this. I am referring to Green's men along the breastworks. I looked through the scenario Battlescript to see if in fact there was an event set up and as you know, Green has no events. However, once Green's men see or engage Johnson's, almost all of Green's regiments either back away from the breatworks, taking up position in the woods or move forward past the breastworks taking up position in the woods. 1 or 2 Regiments MAY remain along the breastworks but, only if they become engaged. Otherwise Green's regiments all leave the works and appear to choose defensive positions in the woods behind or in front of the works.

This conduct from the AI makes me think it is putting higher value on woods than breastworks.

Interesting. And thanks for getting into the details of it. I will take a look later and sumbit a report for Norb if needed. If they are on Hold To The Last or Stay in the script, they shouldn't be making drastic moves like that.

Other than that, how do you like the scenario's? :)

Thanks LP and very much enjoying your scenarios. Always was a 1st day student but, after playing the Culps Hill scenarios, I've found a new curiosity for the 2nd day (non-LRT) actions. Looking forward to making a few of my own once the full SDK and manual comes out.
