when can we create our own maps?

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

when can we create our own maps?

Post by Mozirry »

Whooo, finally purchased!!

I tried using the old power render software from TC2M but it doesn't want to export the .lsl files completely as it should, probably because the files are slightly different/updated?

I believe it was posted by norb at some point that this engine just uses the slightly updated power-render version 6

Anyway, I think I found that map modding is not yet allowed maybe?

I tried putting in a map I created on my own w/ power render 6 and using the old packer utility...although it works I can't access my map in-game.

Hey Mozirry

Not sure when creating your own Maps will be available, I am sure Norb will let everyone know when.

Here is what the SDK says regarding maps :

"In other words, you can do basically anything with the Scourge of War game engine except create new game maps (though you can modify existing ones"

Well, without having any inside information, so this will be a rough guess as to the events that will have to happen in order to mod the maps.

1) Multiple Beta-Patches – to stabilize the game – this is in progress!
2) The Official Patch 1
3) Another Official Patch – probably – most likely – addressing FPS, etc…
4) Additional MP, and Sandbox Maps – you know…Expansion Pack!
5) Probably move in the direction of a Napoleon Mod…..for the next title!
6) Release of the Map Tools…..
7) Approximate Time – 12-18 months!

That’s my two cents!

But, I'm happy that the SDK - is out, I'll need at least a year to figure
out all of these new files!

Hey, Chamberlain - what's new in your world?

I see that you have joined the team; you are doing a very good job with answering the various questions that arise on the forums.

Hey, are you playing the Multi-Player aspect of the game, how is it playing against other players, compared with playing the AI?

Keep up the excellent work!

Davinci,

Thanks for the kind words, it's appreciated !!! :)

I try, as I still do on TC2M to help out other players with problems or questions as much as I can.

Let me tell you, testing MP with the guys is awesome, each time is like a History Class with the knowledge these guys have about the Civil War. :woohoo:

I have played a few MP's games with some of the guys on the board, and I am terrible   compared to some of them, but I enjoy it as it is a good time !!

I am still working on the battles against the AI, which as you know is tougher than the AI in TC2M...

Have you played MP yet ? If so, I hope to catch up with ouy on the Battlefield !! ;)

If any of you heard the podcast Norb and Jim did on the Flash of Steel site my guess is that the map will pretty much be "locked" up based on the interview. Let's not forget this is a money making venture as well. If we were to have total access to ALL aspects of the game what would they have to sell that folks could not make for themselves? Just a thought. ~G

the thing is, the version of Lstudio we used for the game maps is loosely based on PRv6 - but there's so much in the code that Norb has changed under the hood of the app that the maps aren't even operable with the latest version of Lstudio; and since Power Render went under and is no longer really being supported by its initial owners, we basically use proprietary software now to create the maps.

It's ultimately up to Norb how the maps are to be unlocked but that would necessarily entail NSD issuing Norb's tweaked version of Lstudio for concurrent release.

Regarding maps....I understand that we cannot make new maps, but can the existing maps be modified? Looking through the SDK manual, it appears that you can move trees and buildings and fences, etc???? Can you also "repaint" the map surface? ie move roads, streams? bridges, etc???

Just thought I'd ask, I am not there yet....still working on enjoying the base game.
...just my 2 cents,
Marmus
