Distance between files when in column of fours

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Distance between files when in column of fours

Post by Amish John »

I'd like to reduce the distance slightly between infantry files and cavalry files, i.e. a little closer shoulder to shoulder and stirrup to stirrup, when the infantry and cavalry are in column of fours. From years of CW infantry reenacting I know when marching in column of fours you are constantly knocking elbows and shoulders. In the game the men look just a bit too far apart. If the men are closer shoulder to shoulder it should also give a regiment in column a bit of a longer look since the width to length ratio will be reduced slightly.

I was looking in the drills.csv and it looks like the F spreadsheet column controls the distance between columns. Is it the 2.2 value for infantry and the 3 value for cavalry that I should reduce? Anyone know what cells in the spreadsheet I need to change to get this new spacing?

Thanks.

I think that for the Infantry you would change the following lines…..

In the E & F Columnns only

Line 69
Line 134
Line 169

For the Cavalry - the following lines…..
Line 357
Line 376
Line 441

But, I think that you are going to run into another problem, if the units in the same regiment are placed too close together, you will start to get the shuttering, shaking of the units.

But, you can still try it out to see if it works!

Thanks Davinci. I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Well...I changed the 2.2 value in different increments all the way down to .1 in cells F69, F134, and F169 in the drills file in the logistics folder but it doesn't seem to affect the shoulder to shoulder distance when the infantry is in column formation. No other mods were active. Am I missing something? Anyone else try it?

Well, after reading this, I tried changing my values to see if it works, and it does work.
So, the only other thing that I can think of would be that the mod that you were using was not active.

That's definitely the effect I was going for.

I did not have any mods active.
In the Work/SDK/Logistics folder I changed the values in the F69, F134, and F169 cells in the drills file. I didn't make any other changes. I didn't try making this as a mod, just making a folder named "Backup" in the Logistics directory and copying the drills file into it for safe keeping and then made the changes to the drills file in the Logistics directory. Any idea what you might have done I didn't?

OK, let me see how to explain this!

Any changes that you make in the SDK will have absolutely no effect to the game files, the SDK, and the GAME are not connected!

Now, I could change the drills file in my game and this would be 100% acceptable – considering that I don’t play any multiplayer games.

But, if you do, I’m not sure, or the person to ask if any of the default files should be altered!

For the Sand-Box-Thing – you will need to Install the First Mod – called the Small-Mod-Sample at the top of this section, and create a folder called Logistics .

Now place the drills.csv file into that folder, and this will work when you have the Mods active.

If you wish to by-pass this – and change the default files – I’m not completely sure where the Logistics folder would go, but probably under\in the Base folder!

I have only played within the Mod section of the game, and have concentrated on changing the files from there.

Thanks Davinci. With your help I got it. Using a value of 1.6 gives me the results that reminds me a lot of the bumping, jostling you get marching in columns of 4 based on my experiences doing it from 1981 to 2008. The game just keeps getting better and better.
