Question about Little Powell's 2nd scenario, taking cemetary hill

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Question about Little Powell's 2nd scenario, taking cemetary hill

Post by nyy6242 »

I have been playing this scenario on veteran and I just cant seem to hold cemetary hill for long enough. I always end up capturing it, but time runs out before I rack up enough points.

My usual strategy is to move Pender's Division around to the north and attack cemetary hill form the north and east. I use my remaining 3 divisions to attack up the western slope. I usually start off attacking this side with 2 division and hold one in reserve. As soon as I breach the crest and capture the hill, I send my last division in to set up a defensive line.

Either way, I get chewed up badly by the 11th Corp artillery on the hill. I literally lose brigade after brigade trying to take them. My units are continually slowed by fences all the while taking cannister and double cannister at close range. I typically lose 5000-6000 men in this scenario, way more than what I would like.

What is a better strategy to take cemetary hill and still rack up enough points to win the scenario?

Keep in mind you are going to lose a lot of men in this one, but try to lose the most with one division. When I was testing these, I had Anderson's division reduced to practically nothing by the end (I used them the most). So whatever you have to do to take the artillery on Cemetery Hill (even if it means losing most of a division), they are your main objective because once they are gone, the hill should be easily taken. I remember that there wasn't a single artillery piece on the hill when I was holding the OBJ at the end.

I used Anderson, but I recommend using a different one to take the artillery because Anderson will be important to have intact later... ;)

If other folks that have beat it have better advice to conserve your men, please chime in. :)

I never tried that approach. I always attacked the crest of the hill with at least 2 divisions simultaneously, Infantry would pin me down, and cannister would chew me up. I think the problem is the time it takes to get the infantry out of the way and then proceed up the hill; That is the problem. I get to the top, just with not enough time to accrue enough points. But I will try your approach, thanks!

One difference is that when you created this scenario, column charging the arty was allowed. Moving across fences and uphill is much faster in column than in line. That might explain part of the problem.
I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.
