Need help with the Round Top scenario

Post by kaplan71 »

Hi there --

I am stuck at the Round Top scenario, and I need some advise here. So far, I have been able to capture Big Round Top with Benning's brigade. After that, I can take Devil's Den with Robertson's and Anderson's forces. Law's brigade comes around the north side of the cluster. The artillery is stacked against Little Round Top, and lays a continuous fire there.

The problem that I am having is the following: After the points 'run out' on Big Round Top, I dispatch Benning's brigade against Little Round Top. He attacks on the left flank, with the artillery providing covering fire. However, he is beaten back in his attempt. While that is going on, the enemy counterattacks at Devil's Den, and although I can hold on, I notice that my victory points start diminishing very rapidly. I am not even able to get to the Peach Orchard.

So I need to know if I my whole plan of attack is wrong, or if I need to do something different with my current mode of attack. Thanks.

Well I stuck to the battle plan that I described, and I did manage to get a Major Victory. The key was the placement of Law's brigade in the valley between Devil's Den and Little Round Top. The enemy was moving forces through the valley to reinforce the latter site, but was intercepted by that brigade.

While those forces were occupied, Little Round Top could not be reinforced, and eventually fell to a combined arms assault of artillery and Benning's brigade. The enemy forces in the valley were eventually beaten off, and Law's brigade was able to come behind those which were fighting at Devil's Den. Those forces were eventually routed or captured.

One thing I did notice: The time it took to effectively control the round tops and Devil's Den prevented my sending anything to attack the Peach Orchard.
