Great to hear you had a good time. When ever you have a crash, it's a good idea to check your log. There's not always good info in there, especially so late in a game, but sometimes there is a clue. It's in the Work folder and is called sowgb.log .

And a great battle it was, even if we held fewer objectives in the end. 6 v 6 games are always good.

An epic battle for Cemetary Hill (Culp's Hill map). Parker rushed bravely to the hill, three Reb divisions bore down on him. Vegasm3dic rushed to support Parker's left. I started well back and took a long time getting to vegas' left flank. Meanwhile, Seal comes down from Culp's to shore up Parker's right. Vegas holds steady, but you could hear the doubt in his voice: "I may have to fall back," and, "I don't know how long I can hold."

I worked on sspoom's flank, but as usual, he fought an excellent fighting withdrawal, clinging to fences like a tick. But finally I gained a respite (a short one anyway) for the boys on the hill. Barlow and a reformed sspoom counterattacked and I fell back a bit to regroup and rest. Then I counterattacked and ran them back into town. But their (Barlow and sspoom) effort wasn't in vain. The last objective appeared near Spangler's Farm behind Robinson (who had flanked Culp's), but I couldn't disengage and move down there fast enough.

3 Objectives for the Rebs to 2 for us.

I think everyone agreed you did very well, especially with brand new troops. If you had a single unit rout I didn't see it. Plus you got right in there and kept my section of the line from collapsing since I eventually lost 2/3rds of my men. Look forward to seeing you again this evening.

Also, I will mention to you (and anyone else interested) that the Shenandoah Club (which runs the TS server we use all of the time for all of the games) will be launching its new, revamped campaign in the next day or two, once orders are issued. There are still spots available in all three arms on both sides, and each will welcome you warmly.

To those interested: go to www.theshenandoahclub.net and enlist on the side of your choice and fill out the rest of the details. Our War Department will see that you are put in the overall OOB and given marching orders directly.

The Sons of the Sunny South are departing Richmond soon to defend their homes and families, and no doubt Lincoln's blue legions will be marching from Washington directly. One and all are welcome to join us as we mix things up in the summer of 1861.

Apologies to Vegas for stealing his thread for a moment :silly:

Oh yeah. . . you did fine vegas. The Sid Mier's vets are quick learners. You'll soon be as respected and feared as Seal. ;)

And your boys gained some valuable experience:

Good grief, man, don't insult him! If he feels he has only Seal to aspire to, we may never see him again.

I think it would be interesting to feed the live video of those MP games to a window on this website so those who wanted to could be spectators. If there were two or three multiplayer games going on, you could chose from a list that showed the games in progress and the players participating in each of the in-progress games. Watching the MP battles being fought might entice others to try MP. Also, for people visiting the website who haven't bought the game yet, it might convince them to buy.

Does anyone think this concept is even possible?

I'm not sure about the technology needed for that, Amish John. But I promise you watching that battle last night would have been as entertaining as any movie you've recently seen.

Massive firefights, flesh-ripping canister, desperate melees, attacks and counterattacks.

Heck. . . I spent most the battle on the far left flank and didn't see much of the fighting near the Culp's Hill side of Cemetery Hill and didn't see any of the fighting on Culp's.

Tension so thick you could have cut it with a knife.

Really the easiest way would just be to come in and take a general and ride around observing. I believe mikesla and perhaps a few others had looked into at least recording games, but I'm not sure it ever got beyond that.

I'd honestly think it would be more difficult than it's worth (and honestly if it attracted more players to MP, the worth would be immense, in my opinion) and could potentially really chew through some bandwidth. Plus, there is only very rarely more than 1 MP going at a time, and never more than 1 of the scope of, say, last night's battle (6 v 6).

The thing you'd probably really want, to be honest, would be akin to "Spectator Mode" in other MP games, where people can join and just fly around and watch rather than play. However I think this would require a good bit of change both in the game code and the MP server setup. At the very least, maybe, the spectators could join up at the beginning. We have done this before: Just have a handful of officer sprites that can ride around during the battle that people can choose and then just watch.
