Not the best picture to show what I’m trying to explain, but here goes!

Every now and then an enemy unit will cross the battlefield and move in closer than his support units.

When this happens all of my units that in the immediately area will wheel and fire on this unit, the problem here is that they will expose their flank to an enemy unit that is firing on them.

I think that a unit should only turn if they are in immediate danger of being fired at, instead of firing on a unit that is not firing on them, and exposing their flank to the units that are firing on them!

I understand that some of this may be hard too implement, but I don’t think that there should be this much turning \ shifting of the regiments.

The picture shows that the 9th Virginia has taken 40+ casualties from exposing their flank.

You are correct that while in beta, it's your chance to request fixes/changes and there's a good chance they will get in the game.

You guys are our beta testers right now and the first thing we all learned when we joined the test team is to get saves.. That's the only way Norb can fix bugs. Can you please get a save game of a regiment doing this? You can just email it to matt @ norbsoftdev.com

If the save game is to big to email, let me know and I'll send you FTP info.

Btw, zipping a save brings it from ~10 MB to ~600 kb. So it's not inconvenient to send saves in.

Little Powell – I was under the impression that a Modded game can not be sent in to Norb – it would alter \ corrupt the program that he used!

My game is slightly modded!

Ah so you have the stock game modded? Yeah that would probably screw the save up for Norb. I'll see if I can get around to creating your situation and getting a save, but your best bet would get your game back to stock and send in the save. You bring up a good point that whenever someone sends in a save, please make sure mods are disabled.

what davinci has said happens in the regular (un-modded) game as well, and seems to me, at least, to just be a consequence of the targeting system. But yes, it is somewhat annoying and can cost one a lot of casualties. I'm not sure what might be done about it though without losing some of the sensitivity of a unit changing targets as they emerge but this can (and often does) cause problems, especially for cannon, which will often times change targets continuously and rarely, if ever, actually fire. When infantry does this it's eve more costly, but I think some of the fixes discussed last night as to "stacking" may help alleviate this. It seems to happen to infantry most (in my experience) when a unit is "wedged" in between two other friendly units where it might not otherwise fit. Then it desperately seeks a target (assuming the enemy line is similarly dense) and will wheel and wheel, firing only rarely, while its flank gets chewed up.

The primary solution is, of course, to just TC the regiment and steer them where you want, but I've always wondered what this does to a unit's accuracy. I assume that their hit rate is at least slightly higher when they are allowed to auto-target on their own (excepting the times when they fail to wheel and completely face an opposing unit, but then again this could be entirely cosmetic). I like my units to place their front where it seems physically/logically they would present the most fire directly at a target. But if allowed to auto-target, I'm not sure this really matters.

Does this qualify as a short comment? :pinch:

It probably would be good if they could fire obliquely at wider angles. This would also help hinder column charges through the lines, since one of the problems is that the column moves around the enemy regiment, forcing them to keep wheeling, so they never get any shots off. I wouldn't imagine they wheeled the whole regiment in its place in the line to face the flag of an enemy regiment.

This might help to keep the regiments aligned properly, but this will also cause them to suffer more casualties due to being locked into a non-changing stance.

I think that the best approach would be to assign the regiments a priority firing list – so if a unit moves to either flank and is not firing on them, but another unit to their front is firing, concentrate on the unit that is causing the most damage to said unit.

Note post #6 in the attached thread. I suggested this in the past to reduce the wheeling.

LP,

In regards to adding the "L" column to the modded OOBs, Do we have to insert a "comma" in each line to represent the empty column space or will the computer do it automatically. Also, I edit my OOBs in notepad rather than excel. It's way easier for me. Thanks.

If you are using notepad or some other text editor, you'll have to add that extra comma in each line yourself. Excel does it automatically.
I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.
