Re: What a Strange World We Live In
Are all of those guaranteed to be authentic? I don't have doubts about many. Honestly, I'd say a good 80-90% are explainable :silly:
It spoils the fun to be a history person sometimes, I guess.

I thought that's how these things worked...you talk about someone when they're not around.
I'm not entirely sure, but I'm thinking WWI vintage.
In general, you can explain it on the premise that over time (and especially across cultures) the definition of what is humorous is pretty expansive and can change a lot. This is, I think, meant to be a funny picture. The cat could easily be the company mascot. I'd be willing to bet that the building in the background is likely an outhouse, and our valiant hero is just returning, perhaps. Hard to gauge whether the clothing is, in fact, a shirt or something more like a nightgown. Hard also to say what is in his hands, looks like perhaps his bayonet frog in his left hand? Holding it just so because if it has any metal on it it'd be damn cold on bare skin? Either that or he is standing (much to his chagrin) at attention in his skivvies.
Obviously you need your boots if you're going to run to the bathroom in the morning or whatever.

I think it just goes to show that there have always been weird people. Just like Lady Gaga copies David Bowie, it looks like Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali copied whoever it was that made pictures like this... and I'm sure the people who made these pictures were just copying stuff they saw in medieval or renaissance era books. I bet if you looked hard enough, you'd find some weird crap drawn on cave walls or etched in ancient tombs.

Very disturbing.
And some of those chicks are kinda hot in a 1900s sort of way!

I think this begs for a caption writing contest.

Perhaps, or if anyone wants to toss another one(s) out for explanation, I can give that a shot too. But that'd be more for genuine curiousity rather than in the spirit of fun. I neither know what fun is nor can I explain it.
