Played My First MP Game Tonight

Post by McHugh »

My friend and I were finally able to connect up using Hamachi. Couldn't do it using the lobby or TCP with my computer IP address so we used the Hamachi IP address. Anyway, a few comments and questions. As I just bought the game yesterday, it was a lot of confusion in terms of trying to control units and what was happening. We played the McPherson Ridge scenario. I was Meade, he was Heth. I found that the game ran slower then when playing single player so I attribute it to lag. Secondly, I noticed that when I clicked on a unit and TC'ed it, the flag icon did not change like it does in single player. Thirdly, there were a lot of times when units and commanders did not "obey" my commands. For example Cutler would not move until I sent a courier telling him to move to a specific location. This was quite noticeable when units were in action. For example I sent a number of courier messages to the Iron Brigade telling it to move to McPherson's Farm but it just kept firing away until it got overwhelmed.

We are both very impressed with the SOWG. It strikes a balance between simulation and game and it appears you can play it with the emphasis more on either one. Lots to learn and try out.

Hi McHugh.

Great news sir. I have read that Hamachi can cure router problems, great little tool isn't it?

This game is one of the best MP experiences there is, and the people here like KG_Soldier, Baylor, Kester, KG_sspoom, XNS and others are great to play with.

Good to hear you finely got your game in. :)

Cheers, and take care!

The TC icon is usually attributable to lag as well. Click it once and be patient, it can take a second to light up. Be aware, of course, that the difference between highlighted and not is very slight to some folks. If you click it and get worried and click it again, you will end up where you started.

As for your brigade, TC will be your best friend in that (and every other scenario). Some advocate TC-ing every single regiment, but I think it's generally agreed to always TC your brigade commanders to get the best response.

McHugh,

You and your friend should come on Teamspeak (http://www.sow.philipmcg.com/c/platte/p ... _teamspeak) and sign up for Garnier's Campaign as well (http://www.sow.philipmcg.com/c/platte/p ... =view_home). We welcome all new players, and even if you're not ready to play big multiplayer games, Garnier's Campaign will allow you and your friend to create and play balanced, fun scenarios.

Hope to see you on TS.

This hamachi sounds like a remarkable solution for router issues. It's always the big drawback to gaming and especially small companies that cannot afford to run a full time server to assist with connections. I will have to research it further.

Thanks for the invite KG. We are going to play around with the game a bit so we don't embarass ourselves before joining you. At our current level we would definitely be the weak links. Team Speak sounds like you must have a sound program installed for communication? I can't figure out why we could only connect up using Hamachi. After following the procedure to open up port 31791 step by step, my port checker program indicated that the port was open for TCP but not UDP. However even with the port open for TCP we could not connect at the lobby or TCP using my computer's IP address. We had to use the IP address indicated for Hamachi. We have in fact used Hamachi for HPSSIMS Midway game and for Tiger Woods 2008. Hamachi is a free program that can be downloaded. I assume that lag differs from session to session. It wasn't that bad but was slower then single player. I would also think that the more players involved in a session the slower it can get.

Brother M,

Fear not the embarrassment factor. None of you could be as unskilled as some of the Real Generals during the war itself. Remember, Real Heroes Get Stuck In...
