Sandbox divides the map into a 7x7 grid and starts putting divisions into spots on the grid for each army. This is only 49 grid spots, and your union army there has 34 divisions, so it covers most of the map.

I want to play sandbox, with a large army and beginning far away from the enemy.
With the more realistic sprite ratio in this game, it's tough to play army battles without overlap. You can use the Sandbox SR10 mod if you like which brings the sprite level to TC2M level. It can be found in the released mods thread.

Or just play on Alpine. If you manage to overlap on that map you've probably broken the game.

He's playing the big gettysburg map. Sandbox divides it into a 7x7 grid anyway so it doesn't make a difference -- each army is spread out four times as much so still can cover the whole map.
