Interesting photo - Gettysburg 25th Anniversary

Post by Little Powell »

Here is a photo taken at the 25th Anniversary of The Battle of Gettysburg. I've always seen photos of Union veterans at Gettysburg, but never any of a Confederate Veteran standing with Union veterans. Very cool!

I will list the men that are identified. If you can identify any others, go right ahead.

From left to right:

Third from the left holding white Top Hat; Joshua Chamberlain, (2) Dan Butterfield, (3) Henry Slocum, (5) James Longstreet, I think the guy just above Longstreet's right shoulder is George Burling, (7) the one-legged Daniel Sickles, (8) Joseph Carr.

Here is a site that includes several photos from the various GB reunions over the years. My favorite is 3rd photo in the top row that shows the Rebs and the Yanks shaking hands at the stone wall. According to "legend", one or two Confederates were going to climb over the wall at the reunion but were rebuffed by the Union vet who said, essentially, "Not then, not now!"

I was fortunate in meeting a GAR veteran's wife many years ago. She was a "May" bride of the old veteran who lived in Table Rock, Nebraska. During our conversation, she talked about accompanying her husband to the last GB reunion during the 1930s. Near his gravesite in TR, there are a pair of 12 Howitzers on stone pyramids.

I recommend Echoes of the Blue and Gray, which is a 2 DVD set of veteran reunions, parades, etc including footage from the 75th Anniversary of Gettysburg.

Some footage from YouTube

I was not a Wisconsin soldier, and have not been honorably discharged, but at the judgment day I want to be with Wisconsin soldiers. -John Gibbon, responding to a reunion invitation.

I'm not sure I follow your numbering convention, LP. I see Chamberlain and Sickles, but otherwise your numbers confuse me :S

Baylor, I hope the ol' Reb smacked the fellow with his cane. Then again, Yankees always did have a knack for being insatiable jerks :P

Assuming all of the men shown (and 2-3 ladies, to be fair) were of reasonable prominence, I went to school with a guy who could probably name basically every person in that picture :pinch: That reassured me that I would never be a military historian.

Look closely at their jackets. You will see the numbers.

yow, those are a bit hard to see. As if I needed any further affirmation that my eyesight and historical training are declining precipitously.
