Scenario Eleven - We Want These Guns questions

Post by kaplan71 »

Hi there --

I have progressed to Scenario Eleven, and about twelve minutes into it, I have captured the Peach Orchard with the Woffords and Barksdale brigades. I am finishing off the two remaining enemy regiments and their artillery. Further east the Semmes and Kershaw brigades have linked up with Anderson, and are starting to engage the enemy.

I had several questions concerning my next steps:

1. The artillery should be positioned somewhere to help with the attack into the Wheatfield. The question I have is where is the best location for the artillery?

2. How soon should I dispatch one of the brigades that captured the Peach Orchard to assist in the attack on the Wheatfield? Does it matter if it is Barksdale or Wofford?

Thanks.

As far as the artillery is concerned, I want to position it at the edge of the Wheatfield so it can cover the advance by the Semmes and Kershaw brigades. That would mean moving it through the woods behind where the initial fighting is occurring.

When it comes to infantry brigade being dispatched, I have two options:

1. Have Wofford or Barksdale continue his attack from where he is, and force the enemy to divert guns and units to meet this threat.

2. Have either brigade disengage, and go through the woods where Kershaw and Semmes are located, and attack through that approach.

One of my favorite scenarios. Also one of the most challenging.

Check out this AAR here: http://www.norbsoftdev.net/index.php?op ... =103#23251

It's a pretty detailed walkthrough.

Hi there --

I read through the walkthrough, and I tried following it several times, but it seems that I am not getting either of the objectives by the half-way mark of the scenario. So I had some questions concerning it:

1. When attacking the Peach Orchard with Barksdale and Wofford, should I have Barksdale move on the far left and engage first the infantry, and then go after the artillery while Wofford engages the infantry on Barksdale's right?

2. What is the best position for the artillery? Should it all be concentrated first with Barksdale and Wofford, or should some of it be brought over immediately to support Semmes and Kershaw? Based on the answer, what is specific location that you mentioned in the walkthrough?

3. Should there be a solid line between the brigades attacking the Peach Orchard and those attacking the Wheatfield, or can they be two separate battles?

4. After the Peach Orchard is taken, should the brigade that is supposed to be dispatched to attack the Wheatfield be withdrawn around the rear of the other brigade that is holding the Peach Orchard, or should it move around the rear of the enemy line and attack from that direction?

5. Between the Peach Orchard and the Wheatfield is an area where the enemy moves forces to either location? Should that area get much attention, or should I concentrate solely on the two objectives? If the former is true, will artillery alone be enough?

1. Sounds like a good strategy.
2. Bring your artillery closer to the Peach Orchard. There's really no good place to use it for the Kershaw/Semmes OBJ so I've never used it on that portion of the field.
3. It'll be two separate battles.
4. After the Peach Orchard is taken, you'll want to move as many regiments as you can to the Wheatfield to assist there. Just leave enough forces at the Peach Orchard OBJ to still get the points.
5. It's best to leave the area between the two OBJ's alone. That's where the forces will mass for the counter attack at the end, so if you disturb them, they may attack early and your chances for victory will be nil..

Hi there --

Thanks for your reply. Just for clarification on item four:
After the Peach Orchard is taken, should the brigade that is supposed to be dispatched to attack the Wheatfield be withdrawn around the rear of the other brigade that is holding the Peach Orchard, or should it move around the rear of the enemy line and attack from that direction?
Should the regiments being sent over to the Wheatfield go behind the enemy line, or move through the woods in front of the line and come up behind Kershaw and Semmes? Based on your answer to question five it sounds like the latter approach is the preferred method. The only problem being, that route is longer than the other, and going through the woods, even in column, could prove tiresome.
