Internet speed required for MP

Post by charlesonmission »

Hi,

What is the Internet speed required for MP? Is there any change 56 KB/sec would be fast enough?

You mean like, dial-up speed?

There is another poster here who (still) uses dial up, and I heard he successfully connected to an MP game once. Only problem was he couldn't play MP AND use TeamSpeak at the same time, so was at a slight disadvantage in terms of communication. Although, with the new free-text couriers, that might not be as big of a deal. There might be an issue with some of the bigger games, since more players mean more packets of info being traded around, but I don't have any first hand experience with number of players affecting slower connection speeds.

Hi, Turbotay is correct there is another, and that is little old me. :)

I have successfully hosted a game (I haven't tried more than one, who knows maybe 4 total might be workable) which worked out very well, and I have played a few games which had about 10 or so people for each game with very little lag if any.

I have never played a dial-up vs dial-up game so it's hard to say if it would work or not (I can't see why not though).

It does work very well. Turbotay is very correct you don't want to use Teamspeak while playing the game it just won't work (you can give it a try though, nothing stopping you).

Cheers...

Depending on where you live, 56K is being phased out. Last I heard in the US, there wasn't going to be anything below like 128 (I think that's the next highest level).

How are they going to phase it out? Its just noise being sent over the phone line by a modem. I don't see how they could stop it from being transmitted. Even if they could, I would think that would make all the people with fax machines rather unhappy.

Speaking of modems, I know a guy who, years ago, called someones dedicated computer line, and successfully imitated a 1200 baud modem's connection tone. Computer dorks were so much more impressive back in '93.

Moreso in that they were going to have all systems upgraded beyond that so no one would really use 56K anymore. The slowest speed would then have been 128. It may have been phasing out 28.8 to make 56 the lowest. I don't recall the timeframe.

I can't find anything resembling the article(s) I read about it now and it's making me mad.

Edit: I am crap, I give up.
