Civil War Week

Post by mb213 »

I watched Gettysburg on the History Channel and considered it to be a fantastic depiction of the Battle of Gettysburg. While I watched the scenes of the battle surrounding Culp’s Hill I had the sensation I was playing SOW. You really get the sense you are there and how accurately SOW depicts the battleground. Tonight they have Lee and Grant, should be interesting- I guess this is Civil War week on the History Channel.

con20or,

Try going to the History Channel web site as sometimes they will have the show online, and you can catch it there....

Hi.

I know what you mean, I just checked it out myself, and it's not there even though they advertised it on the History Channel here. There is something on the Military channel but I'm not sure if that is the same one or not.

Later.

Tonight’s episode is about Lee and Grant. I have Comcast and the show starts at 9P Eastern. I went on the History Channels website and they have the DVD’s for sale I may pick up the set. Sorry to hear not everyone is able to watch this. I assumed it was more widely aired as the History Channel was calling this Civil War week.

Hi.

Where I live in Canada we do have the History channel, but it appears there must be two versions. One for the United States, and another for Canada (for some odd reason the History channel here really doesn't have all that much concerning anything historical, sure every once in awhile I might see "Greatest Tank Battles"). I was hoping to catch this series but oh well maybe it will make it's way up here, who knows.

Cheers...

Hi.

Here is a small list of what our History channel offers (allot of it is garbage).

1. Rodeo: Life on the circuit.
2. Trashopolis
3. Mash
4. Canadian Pickers
5. Pawn Stars
6. Ice pilots NWT
7. IRT Deadliest Roads
8. Lost Worlds
9. Museum Secrets
10. Sea Hunters
11. Top Gear (usa)

Then it just repeats itself over, and over again until you cough up a nasty hair ball, and crumple up on the floor from sheer boredom.

Later.

Apart from special occasions like Civil War week, the History channel in America is not that much different. It used to be very good but it has gone way down hill in recent years. Now it is all about mason conspiracies, aliens today, ancient aliens, and ice road truckers.

It really is a shame as the old shows about actual history were really quite good, entertaining, and informative.

Gentlemen,

Far be it from me to burst your bubble, but that was one of the worst productions of any Civil War themed show I've ever seen. Ridley and Tony Scott should be ashamed of themselves. The worst reenactment I've ever been in had more production quality then this show. I can run chapter and verse on Historical inaccuracies
throughout the show. Please do not order anything about this particular show.
Here are just three items which show up immediately - Iron Brigade soldiers with crossed rifles on their hats - Crossed rifles for the US Infantry badge did not show up until 1872, 9 years after Gettysburg. The accepted badge of the time was a bugle. Item 2 - Infantry wearing Frock (or long) coats with a double row of buttons down the front. Sorry lads, Double rows of buttons were for Majors and above, not enlisted troops.
Item three - Several times, on both sides, I saw NCO;s with the wrong color stripes. Sgt. Hammlisch or whoever from the 11th. Corps for example - US Army infantry NCO's wore Light or Sky blue rank stripes, which would fade to almost white after a while. His were yellow. Yellow was for Cavalry, Red for Artillery. I saw yellow stripes on infantrymen several times. And those are the easy fixes. Any good Historian OR reenactor should know that.
There was more stuff but you get my drift.

So, just my 50 cents there.
