Installing modded obs

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Here it is. Start the game and you can see the infantry Regiments have no ammo in the display.

If I use the NSD_Sample_1 OOB that seems to be ok but if I change anything or rename the file to something I will recognise the ammo goes missing.

Yeah, this is weird stuff. I see the issue in the saved game. If I generate a startlocation file, it shows their ammo as negative numbers.

What program are you using to modify the OOBs?

I thought Open Office was supported now, but it may have bugs..

I have attached the OOB that I removed the numbers in the OOBMOD column, then saved in Excel. See if you get the ammo problem.

Same problem as before. I don't have excell on this machine so it automatically uses open office. It's a bizarre problem to have.

I noticed as well on some sandbox games the Union and Confederates are deployed in the exact same location so the game starts with a hefty rugby scrum going on :D

So you loaded that OOB that I attached into the game (didn't re-open it in Open Office) and it has the ammo problem? Strange as it works fine for me.. It's going to be hard to troubleshoot this issue since I can't recreate it. You are using the latest version of the game correct? 1.2?

Yeah, the troops overlapping can happen when using large OOBs. Best to just re-load and try again when that happens.

Since your default spreadsheet is Open Office, and Open Office is obviously with issues when saving .csv files, then you need to avoid using Open Office for SOW .csv files. I believe OO is also messing with the placement coordinates. Thanks for testing out Open Office for us, I think we can say officially that it is off the compatibility list.

I use MS Office 97...got it for around $20 via EBay.

I just bought the game yesterday. It's the version that's from the download off the purchase page so I assume it's the most recent build.

Can anyone reccommend a free program other than open office I could use for tinkering with OOBs?

Would it work to use "Notepad" to make the file then "save as..." adding the file extension .csv by oneself? Notepad doesn't add any characters of any sort to the files when they're saved. Failing the "save as ...", perhaps the old trick of saving as a ".txt" then rename the file to ".csv"?? Cheaper than even $20, but maybe there's some characters added by MS Office which the game program requires; I dunno, but my tuppence.

I can but try that. I tried using open office and getting it to save the file as an .xls but the game wouldn't recognise the extension.

Tried the suggested notepad method and the ammo went from 0 to -1

It's a real pity as I have the OOB editor program and would love to get some mileage out of that.
