Time Limit

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Time Limit

Post by born2see »

I am trying to create a custom scenario. I installed the SDK and have been reading through it. I can see where the Start Time is set in the Scenario.ini and I can see the Length of Play in the intro.txt. I'm assuming that is just informational. I've yet to find where the End Time is set. Probably is obvious. Thanks.

Glad to see you're taking on Scenario design.

The scenario is set to end by the endscenario battlescript command. Example:

13:00:00 endscenario

You can also set it to end when the player is killed with:

evtdeath OOB_C_RERodes endscenario:EndPlayerDie

When trying to learn scenario design it can be very useful to look at the scenario files, especially scenario.csv and battlescript.csv. A lot of the wheels have already been invented and copy & paste is always the scenario designers friend.

Thanks Jim. I took your advice and changed the time limit on the "Lost Avenue" scenario from 20 to 30 minutes. I'm convinced no one can win without doing that. I had bluebellies running for the hills, dead bodies everywhere (not mine, I only lost 3 men), and still have only managed to get 80 points at the most.

You probably consider that cheating; I look at it as Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome. Kind of like Captain Kirk and the Kobayashi Maru. ;)

That's why it's moddable. If you mod it and you're having fun, then go for it.

Well you had me wondering about this scenario so I went and gave it a try. I got a 155. I did have to be pretty aggressive to get that, and I drove the Union regiment all the way back to a couple hundred yards from the rest of his brigade.

Sorry you're having trouble with it, it probably should be categorized as medium instead of easy because you do have to pretty aggressive.

Changing the time limit is perfectly cool.. It's good that you're getting into some modding!

A couple pointers:

- Use the stone walls as defensive cover. The union regiment will use them so it's crucial that you use them too.

- Flank, flank, flank. Use one company to attack the center of the union regiment to attract their fire then use the other companies to attack it's left and right flank. You'll only have one company getting fired at, the rest are racking up free points attacking the flanks.

That's good advice. I just let them blast away . Never did try to flank. I hope you know I was just giving you a bad time. Been having a great time with this game and I'm truly in awe of the expertise on this site. Not just about Gettysburg but the Civil War in general. I believe I read you guys walked the battlefield in preparation for this game. Great stuff. I'm a California boy (although my father was from North Carolina) and I may never get to see it in person. I have a friend who lives in DC and she called me from Burnside's bridge a few weeks ago. Sent chills up my spine. Guess you know what my choice is for the next battle. Anyway, keep up the good work.
