This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

This is a rough draft, but I think that I'm going to move in this direction of having a sheet of paper.

Since the new maps haven't arrived as of now, I might as well experiment a little to pass the time!

Interesting. It does give one pause. We tend to think things looked old because they are to us. I wonder what a fresh dispatch looked like back then?

THEY will never give you the keys to the maps! If you were to somehow succeed in cracking them the last sight you would ever see was the Black Helicopters landing on your front lawn. :woohoo:

I like that. It gives the illusion of movement, particularly with the flag flapping in the background.

PS: It appears you don't sleep much either. ;)

Very cool Davinci! I think that mod will be a hit. :)

At first I thought that you may want to add a tan tint to the paper, but then I realized that paper was probably just as white back then as it is today. Check out this famous painting of the surrender at Appomattox and you'll know what I mean: http://www.army.mil/-images/2008/01/06/ ... 085425.jpg

Thanks, I'm probably going to pay for it , I have a fourteen hour work day ahead of me!

Yes, I agree that the paper was probably a different shade of white back then so I added a lot of black specks to it, and sort of roughed it up considering that it had to travel by a courier.

I also changed it so that the sheet of paper appears to have been written on and then ripped only on one side.

If they had books back then, I'm sure after several years of fighting that someone had an idea of a sort of blank book of paper used for writing notes.

I like the direction we're moving in for the appearance of the courier messages. A good friend of mine is the librarian (and also a ranger) at Gettysburg National Military Park. I'll be seeing him this Friday on a Gettysburg Anniversary Battlewalk tour he's giving at 10 AM. I'll try to remember to ask him about the appearance of the field orders he's seen from the battle. I think DaVinci's representation of a page torn from a book is appropriate. Remember, the army back then was a bureaucracy just like it is today. They had tons of forms to be used for each function, including passing down orders from HQ. Of course, those forms weren't always handy in the middle of a fluid battle situation.

One area we shouldn't overlook for these messages, and perhaps more important than the appearance of the paper, is the font. While the current font isn't too bad (better than a typewritten look), something like a 19th century handwriting font like "Lamar Pen" would look more accurate and is still an easy to read font. I believe I had suggested this in the past and NSD said there was a problem implementing it. However, with the talent we now have modding this great game, I bet you guys can find a fix. Here's a link: http://www.oldfonts.com/lamarpen.html This font or a similar one may be available as freeware.

For some reason that link is broken. I think it's the period at the end. Try this:

I like the font.

I have the font file and am trying to attach it, but I don't think the ttf extension is recognized. Anyone know how I can attach it?

Hey AJ,

You're not having a good day. Not trying to steal your thunder, just being helpful. ;)
