Re: Gods and Generals
Yes, it is the basis for the movie Gettysburg. It was written by Michael Shaara, with his son, Jeff, writing the prequel (Gods and Generals) and the sequel (Last Full Measure).
The trilogy make up what is essentially the benchmark for all Civil War historical fiction, although they do strive to be as close to history as possible (as opposed to alternate histories, etc.)
And Civil War stuff is a tough sell at any level - just look how badly our small group panned the latest Gettysburg docudrama disaster. The Civil War is well known enough that mistakes and whatnot are quite costly (less so with fantasy like LotR), plus history films in general are a tough sell because lots of people find them excruciatingly boring.
Even if the fans of the books and self-proclaimed Civil War buffs all flocked to the films and loved them, they wouldn't make back but a fraction of the cost expended to make the films with that sort of grandiose styling and depth. It would be nice, sure, but honestly it is extremely unlikely to occur.

The primary issue at hand with these films (and all films, honestly,) is the $. Ted Turner (aka Captain Planet, for those of you who have been following along on TS) had to bankroll both projects because no one wants to invest in something this big with such questionable returns to be had. Not sound investing. Had Gettysburg not proven to have been so popular once it went to video (it flopped pretty badly in theaters), Gods and Generals would not have been done at all.I was telling someone the other day that Gods and Generals, The Killer Angels, and The Last Full Measure need a Peter Jackson-esque treatment a la Lord of the Rings. It needs to be grandiose and spectacular.

Re: Gods and Generals
movies like 'master and commander' help whip up interest on old style warfare, and last i heard there was a sequel being considered - which i personally would love to see!

LOL...Indeed. I already have both Vids on DVD. My response was to the issue of the NEW releases of the Directors Cuts on Blu-Ray, but not on DVD. Way to go, Ted "I own South Dakota" Turner.
