1:1 Scale possible?

Post by Kensai »

Hi Generals,

last week i heard about the game "Histwar les Grognards", its a game like SOW but not that good :-)

however, they are developing a 1:1 scale of the soldiers (in 3D), and it would be possible to get 500.000 Soldiers on the Battlefield... :)

so my question is, is it possible to to this with gettysburg? SOW has only polygons...and Histwar 3D.

I want to see the Ironbrigade in 1:1 ;)

If this is a PC based game......you would have to have one hell of a monster machine to support all of those sprites.

in Histwar the tester had 130.000 Men on the Battlefield and the fps were quite good.

in the future it would be possible to do, maybe the next step from 1:4 to 1:2 scale ;)

You can set any sprite ratio you want with this game. It's just an entry in the scenario.ini. You can also have it in Sandbox. There are already a couple SR1 scenarios in the game, GB21 and GB22. In GB21 you control a SR1 regiment, GB22 a SR1 cavalry division.

Yes, i know. but these are Companys then. But you can have only 120 sprites per Unit (Company/Regiment). Is it possible to programm more sprites into a unit?

i tried to play SOW with big armies on company level..so a "General" as Regiments Colonel with 5 "Companys" with 120 Sprites on 1/1 Scale. So you have, for example, 20-25 companys (regiments) per Brigade and maybe 60-100 Companys per Division. But that are to much units...

I hope somewhere in future would be a 1/1 scale SOW Gettysburg.

But thats no citic..SOW is one of my favourite PC-games, thank you guys for this game... i want more of this and iam happy to hear about SOW Antietam :) ....Burnside Brigde and Dunkers Church... :woohoo:

I think SR1 with the present game engine works great. Unit sizes don't need to go beyond 125 sprites, otherwise the formation sizes get ridiculous, wheeling and such. The only issues for SR1 play at present are the absence of maps that are scaled for SR1 play with historic representations. Also, the engagement ranges would have to be edited. Maybe other stuff, folks feel free to add.

SR1 works as advertised, exact number of troops, for each kill a trooper falls...the ultimate in firefight realism, and really cool play in my book.

I started work on a huge SR1 OOB one time but never finished it. I believe it was based on the fictional Jackson OOB.

The Iron Brigade in SR1 is an awesome site. It looks like a large division in the scale you are used to.

It is all a balance of detail versus numbers. A PC will only draw so many polygons in a useful period of time. If you are only putting two squads of soldiers on the field, they can be extremely detailed. The choices we made result in being able to put 5,000 to 15,000 sprites in action on the battlefield depending on your system and option settings. To get over 100,000 sprites on the field is possible if they have very little detail individually. It is all a question of the priorities of the developers and the playing community.

So i would prefer less detailed polygons but more of them on the battlefield :)

In the future it will be possible to get 1:1 scaled regiments, i think. Take COmmand had 1:10, SOW has 1:4, and maybe...hmm... SOW Gettysburg II will have 1:2 and III a 1:1 ratio

i would pay every price for seeing armies of hundreds of thousands soldiers marching on the battlefield

I think there might be some confusion here. 1:1 ratio is currently available in the game. There are two East Cavalry Scenarios that use it. It's just a setting in the scenario.ini (also a setting in the sandbox ini files). You also have to construct a company level OOB. A huge 1:1 regiment not split into companies is unrealistic. Historically, companies were lined up beside each other to form the regiments, but they were also detached as skirmishers, would wheel to face different directions formations etc. See Company B from the 20th Maine on Little Round Top. They were detached and guarded the far left flank of the regiment.

Also we are throwing around the idea of having the new map team create 1:1 scale maps. It would be very cool to have a 1:1 Little Round Top map.
