Frame Rates between SOWgb v1.2 & v1.3

Post by Michael Slaunwhite »

I just started to get back into playing SOWgb, and I have noticed since I have installed the latest patch (v1.3) my frame rates are dead. Even at the level of just a simple corps vs corps kills me. So I decided to do a quick test between version 1.2, and 1.3. This test uses the same maps, and same mods...

Now, I have tried playing GCM's Kansas map with version 1.3, and it just killed me. I was averaging between 3, and 6 frames per second...I did try version 1.2 with the GCM Kansas map, and the frames were just excellent...no real slow downs to speak of.

Mods used: GCM Kansas map, and Mac Map, sound edits, and bloodbath 3.

Version 1.3 Screenshots with Frame rates...

The attachment sowgbv1.3_start_fps20.jpg is no longer available
Note: I am playing the Mac Map, corp vs corp, and at the start before any troops start their orders I am receiving 20 fps.
The attachment ver1.3_begin_fps_btwn4_7.jpg is no longer available
Note: When the troops begin to move, and fill their orders I am getting between 4, and 7 frames. (corp vs corps)
The attachment Ver1.2_Kansas2_Map_fpsbtwn2440.jpg is no longer available
Note: Version 1.2, Kansas Map, same mods active, and at the beginning I was getting between 24, and 40 Frames (surprised the hell out of me).
Here are two shots of ARMY vs ARMY, Mac Map patch version 1.2, same mods active as above.
The attachment start_v1.2_armyvsarmy_macmap.jpg is no longer available
Note: Starting position before orders are received.
The attachment begin_v1.2_armyvsarmy_macmap.jpg is no longer available
Note: beginning to fulfill orders.
So what has changed in the new patch which is causing such a drastic drop in FPS?

If anything your frames should have gotten better with 1.3... Hmm... Possibly a corrupt install? Or it's possible that the performance enhancements Norb put in have negatively affected your graphics card.. Although that's unlikely, this is the first report I've seen of 1.3 slowing down the game...

This is what I’m thinking, but be advised that I have been wrong before, so today is probably no exception!

My game works very much like the pictures that you have posted above, at the start of the game I have pretty good FPS showing.

After, I start the movement of the troops the frames will drop down roughly by half, if not a little bit more.

Now, once the marching has stopped, and the fighting has began, the FPS will slightly increase.

Be advised that when your fps are dropping not only are your troops moving, but the AI is also moving just about the same amount of troops.

View the fpsticks , and the updates in the pictures that you posted, and notice how the numbers are changed!

How, I tried to solve this problem, was to create a special OOB that my Computer could handle, that would keep my fps at an acceptable rate.

Okay I'll keep an eye out for the fpsticks.

A thought just occurred to me. In TC2M if you set your A.I to high, this would put a heavy load on your system (fps), so I am wondering if I should perhaps change the A.I from Normal to Militia, or Untrained for larger battles (Army vs army)?

If not then I'll have to start creating my own oob's like you have done.

Could be a bad download.

System Specs.

1: Windows 7 (x86)
2: AMD Phenom II Quad Core X4 940 3.0 ghz / 4 gig of Ram
3: ATI Radeon HD 4600 series.

I don't know, I'm just wondering what type of system would be needed to run this game at maximum.

In this game it is controlled by the SOWGB.ini file.

I think that the default is something like 40

[DEBUG]
DbgLvl=1
aicount=65

Probably, one that was built by Aliens , not the Alienware Computer , but the real ones, you know somewhere out there!

It appears I didn't have the latest patch version of the game installed. I had version 1.3 installed (poor fps rates), and the latest version is 1.3.010. Now I am not too sure what any of the changes were made between the 1.3, and the latest version to allow me to now play Army vs Army with the GCM Kansas map, Bloodbath III, Alternate sounds.

The frame rates I am getting are between 4, and 6. Still not the greatest since version 1.2 is still giving me somewhere in between 6, and 9 fps, but it's something I can live with.

Why Not , reduce the following Settings, they all appear to be roughly 1000 yds or higher.

Max Units…..
Max Trees…..
Max Objects…

Also – what is the percent of trees showing?
