SOWgb.ini, Fog Maps by Davinci, and Jack O'Neill...Question.

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

SOWgb.ini, Fog Maps by Davinci, and Jack O'Neill...Question.

Post by Michael Slaunwhite »

First off I love playing with the Fog Maps, thanks again Davinci, and Mister O'Neill.

Now there are two questions here, well maybe three if I stay on message (Jack I know that can be hard for me).

When using the fog maps, I have reduced everything to it lowest settings. My question is two fold...

1: Can the sowgb.ini be added to the mod, and when the mod is activated the modded sowgb.ini override the users default?

2: In the SOWgb.ini the lowest settings for Max Units draw distance, Max Tree Distance, and the Max Objects draw distance is 400, can I over ride this number with a lower number (I like to have 200 or less)?

I just remembered my 3rd question, and this is too the NSD team.

3: Can the mini map have real fog of war? Meaning the more you explore the map, more of the map will show in the minimap.

Anyway the whole reason is to make these fog maps make you feel more isolated.

Oh one more thing, you should see the fps, it's off the charts.

1) I would guess that that is probably not possible, but that is a guess!

2) I would guess again, probably not, if the wrong setting is listed in this file, the file will over-write it with another correct setting.

The only way to avoid the game over-writing the file would be to lock the file as read-only . It will still probably default back to a default setting, it just won’t show what that setting is!

This controls the fog and the viewing area, so you may have to play around with those numbers!

;Fog
FogEnable=1

FogNear=-5000
FogFar=20000

The only true logic is that, there is no true logic!

Mike,

Based on my limited knowledge of Mods and Coding, I would agree with DaV. You probably can't change anything in the .ini files as they would default/reset to a correct number.
However, I have seen games such as the Cossacks/Napoleanic game where you retain some of the area visiblity if you have been somewhere but then withdraw from it. So it IS possible, but that's for the Norb/Team to figure out.

1: Your right, it won't work. I tried having the work folder with the sowgb.ini in the fog mod directory, and that didn't do anything.

2: Again your right that is exactly what it did. I changed the values from 400 to 200, and the game defaulted back to the base values of 400 (previously set in the options menu). So I changed the values back to 200 again, and changed the file to read only, and that didn't work so it must be hard coded to accept no values lower than 400 (the distance values didn't look like they changed at all)...oh well.

Okay thanks for the above fog values, I'll mess around with it.

oh, the reason why I wanted to mess with the game distances is because even with the fog maps running I noticed the distant trees, and building would show on the horizon which just doesn't give me the full effect of being lost in the fog. Now occasionally a building or marker will show in the distance, but otherwise it's allot better when playing with the fog maps.

Thanks for the help...

Yeah your right. Oh well maybe NSD will decide to add this in some future patch or addon.
