Commanders wouldn't worry about route step in a combat. The infantry would hold them any way they wanted to, and "right-shoulder shift" is only a thought of name, it really is only used in parades and such. A good regiment close to the firing line wouldn't care how their men held their muskets; as long as the men got into battle and fired at the enemy, the regiment was golden.

Finally i found the forum tools which in flat mode allow me to read all discussions and replies!!!!!
Great preview. Norb, among the glitches to fix, there's the problem of obstacles...don't let the soldiers walk through the fences like they weren't there please please please!!!

Also, i think i've read on the mmg boards that the stonewall, trenches and other sort of obstacles to build a cover from bullets were to be added in the new game. Is that gonna happen?


Music is definitely from Gettysburg...BTW, did the Movie "Last Full Measure" ever come out?

No. As it stands, it looks like "Last Full Measure" will never see the big screen.

That is a shame, but Maxwell did a pretty bad job with "God's and Generals". I still think they need to make the civil war films more gritty. Not quite like S.P.R. but they could stand to be more realistic. With as much power as they have with CGI and computers they should be able to make better battle scenes and what not. I just dont' think they develop enough stories for the civil war movies. They try to make it way to intimate when it was at times, but it was a grandious affair.

Just my ramblings...

I agree estabu2! Especially with the battle scenes.
I haven't seen an ACW movie that had decent battle scenes yet. They're not all bad. But with the kinds of, large scope, battle scenes I've watched in other movies, using computer effects, it's a shame it hasn't been done with an ACW movie. I guess my expectations that Gods and Generals would have something like that, is one of the reasons I was somewhat disappointed with the movie. But it may not have been in their budget.

Those who can't see the videos, download tight Vlc. It's the most awful media player i know but there's absolutely no format or codec it can't read (and it's free).

As of the movie/game...look at Gettysburg and what happens when the rebels reach the fences...and especially look how they get mauled in close shooting against the northern rifles. Every volley, dozens fall.

We desperately need in this game a working arty with arty vs arty battles and a ONE set of files that alter everything in scenarios so that you don't need to mod 50 scenarios to alter parameters, u alter the main ones and all scenarios change.

That said, for example it would be nice to make the regimental flags fall down and be retaken up by the bearers...the drummers and pipers with the bugles...and of course, without wind a standing regimental flag wouldn't be "flat" but wrapped down on itself and would reopen only if the regiment rushed. B)

Well...plenty of ideas, but also plenty of expectations but really the looks have much improved from tcm2. I hope Norb makes it a priority on a working Arty and casualty rates. With a 1:1 ratio it's easy to find the correct parameters but without...eh...

The smoke has got to be a tough thing to code. I don't know if what we see is the final smoke, but I'd offer a couple suggestions.

Be careful not to overdo the musket smoke. The battlefield becoming obscured from smoke was a (obviously) cumulative effect. A single regimental volley shouldn't put up a 15 ft high wall of opaque smoke (45 seconds into preview video).

The smoke from the artillery should project farther out in front of the artillery piece instead of being a sort of rounded "puff" sphere of smoke (55 seconds into preview video). If you've ever been part of a 12 lb Napolean artillery crew you know the discharge of the piece is a very violent act, even with a reduced powder charge for reenacting. The animation should reflect that violence.

While musket muzzle flashes in the smoke should be a part of the animation, the flash in the artillery smoke should be readily apparent.

So far, the smoke looks much improved from TC2M.

This smoke stuff is really easy to suggest since I don't have to make it.
