Melee Bug

Game won't run. Keeps crashing. Hopefully we won't get any posts here, but if we do, we'll try to help you out. You can also post any bugs that you find here. IMPORTANT: Don't post mod related problems here!

Melee Bug

Post by KG_Soldier »

Cleburne found a bug which involves the charge button. Cleburne and Garnier and myself have tested it in both single player and multiplayer, and the bug (or perhaps better named exploit) works in both.

While engaged in melee, if you repeatedly click the charge button, the enemy regiment's morale practically disintegrates and your points skyrocket.

Cleburne and I tested this in MP first, each doing to the other in set up melees.

We told Garnier about it and he tested in single player and said it does the same thing.

We tested with the GCM mod on and with no mods.

I'm not sure if anyone has been using this or not, but it needs to fixed as soon as possible, please.

Norb has been notified and it's in our bug tracking software as an issue. Thanks for reporting it. This kind of feedback from the community is greatly appreciated.

This is top priority from MP perspective -- as people know about it and there's no way to prevent or even detect that it's being used, pretty much impossible to play MP unless you absolutely trust all the players. For singleplayer it only really matters if people use it to get General status real fast.

When a regiment is in melee, each time the player clicks the charge button (which can be done rapidly), the regiment gets an instant 10-30 kills.

If it helps, here's a screenshot and savegame. I took this reb regiment and wiped out two yankee regiments with almost no loss:

And to think, I had to do it the hard way...twice!
I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

I hope the Norb and Co. understand what a game changer this glitch/bug is. I've got like 5 posts here on the forum but over 400 battles on MP in the last year and I doubt I'll play any more until there is a fix. I tried this in a SP game and easily drove off Biddle's brigade with 2 regs of Gordon's brigade. I don't know if it's the same in MP but it didn't even take a lot of clicking, 3-4 clicks and the melee was decided.

MP games are intensive sometimes and there can be some friction in the heat of the moment. Every game has melee in it at some point. People will be tempted to use it or at the least wonder about every melee result that goes against them. I have no idea who has or hasn't used it and don't really care at this point, except that I can see this ruining the game experience.

Thanks to Cleburne, Soldier and Garnier for getting this out there.

This is great, lol. The other day Seal was column charging the left of my line. He brought his whole brigade up against my one right regiment and thoroughly trashed it. I saw him doing it and double timed my reserve brigade to deal with him. They didn't get their in time to save my lone regiment, but did get there and I immediately ordered lines and charge! Now it is difficult to column charge (I never have done it) because the closest regiments will charge and the rest will stop and then Seal will thoroughly trash those charging regiments. Well I just kept hitting the charge button to keep the troops engaged and in melee. I guess Seal got a dose of his own medicine because he was thoroughly trashed. I thought he was tired out from running so far, but maybe it was this bug.

Recently, he has been trying to employ more historical and honorable methods, but has since returned to his old ways of column charging. I am really tiring of this column charge business.

Jack MP is for the most part a good group of guys and this bug is not widely known or used. There is no problem with playing MP even now.

Don't think this will have any bearing on the MP group that i play with at all. The guys that play the 7 p.m. EST GCM MP game are all stand-up, straight shooting guys. Besides, they're all strategically and tactically sound enough to win without ever "fixing bayonets".
