Attaching Art'y. Battery to Inf. Brigade

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Attaching Art'y. Battery to Inf. Brigade

Post by Kerflumoxed »

There are several of us who have gravitated to HITS/Couriers in the never-ending search for the most historical aspects possible and are wondering about attaching an independent artillery battery to an infantry battery. We usually play division vs. division, balanced sides with one player assuming the role of Division Commander and the remaining players choosing an infantry brigade commander. The remaining unassigned troops remain under the command of the D.C. including all the artillery batteries. Our questions: "Is it possible for the D.C. (or whomever) to attach a battery to the command of an infantry brigade CO so that it responds to orders in the same fashion as the infantry regiments?" Question 2: "If so, what are the steps to be followed to accomplish this task?"

Thanks for your assistance.

Unfortunately no - the detach command isn't really designed for that, its more for removing a unit from under an AI generals control so they dont get moved every time you order the parent unit. For guarding OBJ's etc.

Currently there isnt much of a facility for altering OOB's on the fly, although you can switch troops across brigades inside a division. Only with the toolbar, not with the courier menu.

This is something I would like to see as well at the higher formation level - ie transfer brigade to a different division, division to a different corps etc, particularly when your army commander so I will push for it in future releases if it isn't a huge amount of work for Norb to do (which to be honest it probably is).

To clarify, we are hoping to be able to attach an artillery battery to a brigade, either before the game starts or during, and have them assigned to that brigade for the duration of the game. If it could be attached/detached "on the fly", so much the better, but not necessary....just the ability for the brigade commander to subordinate one battery to his command.

Thanks for the info.

Looks like something we'll have to do in a mod, then.

In that case, I wouldnt think so.

You would need always need a dedicated commander for artillery in your brigade. The toolbar commands are totally different for the two units.

Edit - Just saw AJ Johnstons reply - if you can mod it, go right ahead, I'd use it!

Well, sir, I'd be making up a 'battle mod', for use either in a tournament context or to create a battle arising in a campaign. It wouldn't be a generic mod, like the trees or smoke mods; it would a mod made up for a particular battle scenario. Reason I'd do it that way is that I am given to understand that only one mod can be used in MP games and since I'm using mods to set up battles in the campaign (and in competitions), there wouldn't be 'room' for a second mod. Or am I mistaken, my understanding may be wrong about only one mod for MP games?

I hadn't heard that, but to be honest i dont know, I dont play MP much.

You could ask in the MP forum, someone should know the answer there.

All that you need to do is move your command level up one position. Use corp instead of division and that way each single brigade in a division could be grouped with a battery. This is just an OOB. You can do this with Garniers OOb creator in about 10 minutes(less really).

I Corp
A.Division
1. Brigade
2. Battery
B. Division
1. brigade
2. battery

If you are using couriers then there is another layer of command and another set of couriers. You could tc your brigade leader it shouldn't be that much harder.

There used to be a way you could do this in Sid Meier's Gettysburg.
If you were playing MP, you could deselect control of one of your units and another player could select control while in game.

For example if I was a division commander with 3 brigades and one of those was needed by a near-by player, I could deselect command from that and than that player would click on the brigade and select command and be able control the brigade.
