One last clarification on orders via courier....

Post by gbs »

I have started back playing and had a game as Corp command in an Army vs Army game. I am patched to the latest beta and the only mod related to couriers I use is the "Courier Fix" mod. BTW the orders line up on this mod is very helpful and Norb should use it as his standard. I'm see some inconsistencies in how the game reacts. Also each time I play, I use the time switcheroo that was suggested for my first order.
This is what I see. As Ewell my first courier order to Early is received and he sends out messengers to his Division commands...but all regiments under him begin to move even before the couriers from the division leaders is received but the messengers do go out and once they reach the regiments then they all fall in line, move toward the roads etc.
My next order goes to Rhodes who receives it and sends couriers (after some delay I might add which I assumed is related somehow to his abilities)to his division leaders. This time the regiments do not move until they receive their orders from their divisions. As you see ...inconsistent. None of this actually interferes with my enjoyment of playing. Perhaps this is mostly related to playing at the Corp level. I may try playing as Lee and see what happens.
I haven't noticed any of this when playing as a division leader yet. I know there has been discussion on here about what a bear this whole courier system is to work on but it is the best thing about this game if you ask me. I was wondering if any additional work was being done from a game engine standpoint on this very important feature.

I too see that behavior when I play at custom level. I've been doing that quite a bit lately, so I can 'pop up' and watch how well the brigades and regiments now behave. As you say, it's noticeable, but doesn't really detract from the game. Most of the time I play at historic difficulty, where couriers are set to division level and the regiments always move immediately, so I'm use to seeing that.

There have been a couple of strange bugs that have crept into the courier system, but I'm sure Norb will sort things out. It's been interesting to see how the courier system has evolved from a very basic system to a more sophisticated one. Given its popularity, I'm sure there will be more improvements forthcoming.
I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

The weirdest thing is how it is acting differently on peoples systems. All commanders wait for their orders by courier before moving when I play. The only buggy part on my system is the change facing command, where each unit will rotate to the required facing first, without waiting for orders.

GBS, can you please disable all mods, try it again, and give me the exact order of commands you are using. Tell me the OOB you are using as well.

OK. It may be a while though since I'm at work now and all. I'll try the same set up with Ewells Corp in an Army vs Army sandbox game. I'll turn off all mods including the courier fix mod. I also will use the time switcheroo on my first order. I'll report back later.

No hurry.

Do you always need the 'time-switcheroo'? It was my impression that when done once it removed the problem.

Ok. I started a Army vs Army sandbox game as Corp commander Ewell, day 3 OOB on the Gettysburg map. I disabled all mods. I sent two seperate orders via courier to both Rodes and Early in this sequence.

No orders....
move your unit to....
location (Rhodes)& map point (Early)....
face this direction....
formation.....
use roads.....

Everything worked perfectly. Courier were dispatched from the Divions to the Brigades and then to the regiments. No one moved untiltheir orders were received.

One oddity (there always seems to be one). The 6th NC regiment never moved and stayed resting. It had bee in line formation not 50 yards from its commander Avery. The entire Corp marched off and left that one regiment at parade rest. Avery was the very last brigade commander to receive his orders because the courier from his division took the road rather than the direct route as usual.

I always do the time thing on the first order only. My experience has been if i don't...nothing happens.

Ok - so it works fine with no MODS, glad to hear it.

Try enabling mods one at a time, that will help you find the one that is causing the problem.
