In any engagement in the Civil War, Corps (and even divisions) did not really have formations. This is reflected in SOW. Unfortunately, it also makes it difficult to play at army level.
Try this:
1. Give Ewell a stance (defend, attack, etc.)
2. Order his divisions to the locations you wish them to go to (include a formation when you send the order)
3. Have Ewell move to a location somewhat to the rear of his divisions, but in the vicinity.
4. If you want to break some of the rules, you can even give stances to the division commanders.
This will cause Ewell to do the job of a corps commander: rally broken troops while keeping divisions generally in line.
It is pretty hard for anyone to code in how a good corps commander should act, so don't expect army command to be realistic. Corps command is far more realistic in this game, and division command is even more.
I usually use the rule of thumb, command two levels beneath you. As a corps commander, I instruct where individual brigades should move, when to attack, etc. As a division commander, I work on a regimental level.
Of course, this is slightly more difficult when you are playing HITS.

This is a list of how I would order units using General Longstreet - ordering General Pickett:
From the courier menu screen:
………………………………..
Click – Major General Pickett
-Orders-
Take Command On
Move to…
Move to this map point…
-Click on map-
Face unit in this direction…
-North-
-Orders-
Change to this formation…
Division form March Column…
-Orders-
Move to…
Use road for your units
(Send Message)

The only true logic is that, there is no true logic!

Yeah I've done this before myself, but was hoping to play a bit more realistic game by giving orders as the army commander to the corps commanders and leaving execution up to them. I'll try some of the things you've suggested here, thank you for your input.

Re: Corps Commanders do NOT follow orders sent via Courier.
alright, one last post on this and then I'll stop bugging ya'll about this.
The keyboard change I made seemed to do the trick, along with setting the stance of the commander prior to giving map move orders.
The Corps Commanders are executing their orders independent of direct command. Not EXACTLY as I would do them, but they are (in Hill's case) attacking the enemy in front of him, and in Ewell's case, probing the vicinity of Gettysburg. This was the kind of activity I was expecting to see in the first place. I just did not have all of the proper tools in place to make it happen.
Thank you gentlemen for your input and assistance, you were alot of help!

For the definitive guide to the courier message window and its use, check out post #6 in this thread:

As Hancock has explained, this isn't really for corps level. At division level and below, however, it works a treat.

Hi Leatherneck.
As soem of the guys have already said, you always need to specify a formation unless youre giving probe orders. There are no corps formations in the game, but MTG has included some in his courier mod if you would like to use them.
