"There is nothing left for me to do but to go and see General Grant and I would rather die a thousand deaths." - General Robert E. Lee
"The war is over; the Rebels are our countrymen again." - Ulysses S. Grant
That's actually a tough one, most of the men surrounding Grant are are lower level officers. I can only recognize two generals surrounding Grant, and that's Phil Sheridan to the far left of Grant, and George Custer to the far right.Challenge: Name the commanders in the picture!
I've got the hard one, General Grant is the one signing the document. :woohoo:
The message that Lee was willing to meet caught up with Grant while he was away from HQ, "...about four miles west of Walker's Church..." Rather than waste time, and possibly lives, returning to his HQ to change, Grant rode directly to the front. While on the road he received word of the designated meeting place. Had Grant been at his HQ when that final message arrived, I do not doubt that he would have dressed for the occasion, and of course him and his staff would have cleaned their boots. Why have all the Union officers got such dirty boots while Gen Lee's are clean and polished?
