After much discussion/deliberation officials are removing a Confederate Civil War Fort so they can get access to an earlier fort on the same site. In this case.... the 1607 fort at Jamestown, Virginia.

Re: Civil War fort at Jamestown is dug up to get at 1607 site
I was given the link to this article yesterday by a friend. It seems about half of the lost location of the 1607 fort was destroyed anyway when the Confederates built their earthworks partly across the site.
Upon excavation the archaeologists have found all the best 1607 period material was heaped up in disorder within the banks of the 1861 fort.
We can't blame the Confederate defenders of Richmond for doing so much damage to so valuable a site whose location had by then been lost.
I remember reading of a similar dig somewhere in Oxfordshire, England where the site of a Medieval manor house had been partly destroyed by a 1640s Cromwellian-period artillery fort.

HITS & Couriers - a different and realistic way to play SoW MP.

Like it says in the end of the article the fort played a part in the Monitor vs Merrimack duel. Its a shame they're taking part of it down. I got to see the salvaged remains of the Monitor when I visited a few summers back, pretty cool stuff.
