Sample Map recording of a battle.

Post by Michael Slaunwhite »

I was thinking that during an MP game, you have an observer take command of the entire army, and he/she sits back, pulls the map up, and records the movements on the map only. Later of course uploading them.

Here is a small video of a small example of a battle I was conducting. I sped the game up so you would have an idea of what I am talking about.

If you wish to know how to do this, I will post a How To, but that is only if I am asked too unless Garnier has already created a tool for this (Garnier is a handyman when it comes to creating utils, so it wouldn't surprise me if he did, or is working on one). :)

With v1.5.

And don't ask 'when'. Its the #1 question not to ask of any developer who says a new patch is coming.

@ Mike - It would be better without the cursor moving about and getting in the way with the name tags. People watching aren't interested in which regt is which, they just want to see the AI perform.

I have enjoyed many games where I watch almost entirely from the map screen. I give corps-level or division-level commands only, no micro-managing. I often speed up the battle to watch what transpires. The map screen mods make this more doable.

Other times I enjoy just as much playing the exact opposite way, micromanaging a brigade or division, etc, with little or no reference to the map. Evidence of the brilliance of the game's design.

Saddletank I disagree. I thought the mouse-overs were very illustrative of what you can do at the map screen (I count myself as "people"). When you play that way, you can use the cursor any way you wish.

I see your point, but I think it would be difficult to know who is who, and who is doing what to whom.

If all you see are regiments moving about (without descriptions), and not seeing what is actually happening, it would be nothing more than a lack luster meaningless bunch of squares moving about a map.

An option to turn it on or off would be beneficial which would be more along the lines in which would please both camps.

Seeing the regiment names adds nothing. You still have no idea who is doing what to whom or why. You need a full battle description and commentary to get any sense of the what/who/why out of battle videos. You know what's going on, because you fought the battle but any other viewer just sees annoying labels poking up and an intrusive cursor flying everywhere getting in the way. If there was no cursor and labels I'd have watched it all the way through in order to see what the AI did, as it was I switched off after 30 seconds because it was too hard on the eyes with that cursor in the way.

Just a bit of friendly viewer feedback ;)

I understand what you mean, it can be annoying for some. Now with the 1.5 patch on it's way, and with the recorded feature I can't wait to see what they have done with it. I hope it's like the battle replay in Sid's Gettysburg.

Feedback is always welcome saddletank. :)

Well, I enjoyed seeing the cursor point out individual regiments and leaders. I have fought with these units so often that I like to know who is attacking where. I much prefer that to simply watching the AI and not knowing what brigades or divisions are involved. Now that would be boring to me, unless I was the one who actually played the game that was being replayed.
