Bugles & Flags XIX

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Thanks D for the refresh info, yeah, those screen shots do look great. The 'not keeping up with the patches idea' could be trouble though, but I guess it won't hurt for folks to try them. Worse thing that will happen is they'll just crash...then they'll know. :(

How are your computer fixes going? Looking forward to your presence again introducing new stuff, and upgrading old, in the Modifications section. It's just not the same without ya.

See ya there soon I hope, our Nashville artist in residence. :)

This is true , but I was referring to the newer png files that was added – I’m not completely sure if it helps on certain Computer Systems .

I think that the game is more geared towards the CPU and the Memory than it is towards the Graphics Card .
How are your computer fixes going?,
Up and Down, as soon as I think that I have fixed one thing, another thing breaks, but I can’t really complain, it is a five-year-old system, so I have more than gotten my monies-worth out of it!

But, Thanks’ for asking!.....BTW – are you finally getting some rest while awaiting the release of the next patch!

Back-On-Topic – Your flags are still a must-have-mod! Keep up the excellent work!

Ha, ya got to be kiddin'...This new deal has got us all going overtime, getting it RIGHT for the new, BIG transition. And of course, I'm second-guessing everything and everyone, turning Norb into a BEAR at times, and PO'ing most of the team. Other than that, things are going well. :P

I'm very sorry, I did not mean to take this thread off topic, I was just trying to see if all the mods could be used together.

Davinci, you have a PM from me.

Thank you all for your time, as I have said, both Bugles and Flags and Bloodbath IV are just awesome and I sincerely appreciate all the efforts of the modders.

Dear RebBugler,

I have read enough of your posts to realize you are more than abundantly busy and have plenty on your plate. What I would like to request, is if you could make a SOW flag of my ancestors 4th Mississippi Infantry flag that I could use in the game. I have a color picture of the one most popularly known.

If their is not time for this, I apologize and do recognize that you make fantastic free mods that are, frankly, enough for anyone to be happy with.

Thank you in advance and with all due respect,

James

I wanted to add a little history of the flag that is pictured for anyone interested; it was captured 5th Minnesota Volunteers at the Battle of Nashville (shudder).
The 5th Minnesota Infantry captured the colors of the 4th Mississippi at Nashville, but they paid an extremely high price for the honor. Lieutenant Colonel William B. Gere, commander of the 5th Minnesota, wrote of the fighting on December 16 in which the 4th Mississippi’s flag was taken: “At 4:15 p.m. the order to forward was given, which being repeated along the line, the Fifth Minnesota, with bayonets fixed, moved over the breast-works in their front into the open field which lay between them and the enemy’s works, and at a double-quick rushed forward under the most terrific and withering fire of musketry and artillery it has ever been my fortune to behold or encounter. Yet, forward our line pressed, and soon the colors of the Fifth Minnesota were planted, the first in our brigade, upon the rebel intrenchments, and the enemy were driven from their fortified position. The regiment pursued, capturing hundreds of prisoners, among whom was Brigadier-General Jackson, and many other officers. I think I can safely say that the Fifth Minnesota captured more prisoners in this charge than the regiment numbered…The glorious victory we had won had not, however, been a bloodless one. The loss in my regiment in this charge had been nearly 100 killed and wounded, which was about one-fourth my entire command.” (Official Records, Series 1, Volume XLV, Part 1, page 451)
PS I'm attaching the best color picture of the true 4th Mississippi Infantry Battle Flag that I know of plus a couple of sites concerning the flag:

Well James, you lucked out. Like I said in our PM correspondence, I could not guarantee how long this would come to be as I have many projects on my plate. However, one of those projects is to develop a new Hi Rez, HD flag for SOW's next game which is scheduled for production in 2013, but presently still in it's infancy planning stages.

And guess what? Late last night, after I saw your post, and as I had only consumed one beer, I decided to go ahead and see if this Mississippi flag could fly in HD. Then, as I enjoyed another MGD, in under an hour, and with many lucky calls because I was basically experimenting with new, larger, rebuilt templates...Eureka, it worked.

Attached please find a complete mod displaying this 4th Mississippi Flag that James provided. It is scripted into the included, and edited SB OOB - OOB_SB_HD_4thMiss_Gettysburg_3Days_DRF.csv - Barksdale's Brigade. I did not touch it up at all, purely in it's raw state, but still, as you will see, well represented. This mod is only compatible with B&F as I edited a SB OOB within this mod, so, enable with B&F. Or, meld it with B&F:
- copy the GFX file into the Logistics folder and overwrite the present B&F GFX file,
- then copy the lone graphics file, Mississippi_4th.tga, into the Graphics/Flags folder.
Once these two things are done, then this flag can be included in any of the B&F OOBs. So, put on your modder's hat and have at it if you want to have it in several OOBs. However note, it's ahistoric for eastern battles as are all our present OOBs, but still fun eye candy.

This flag is unique in two ways, besides the high detail, being able to see real stars with five points and actually reading all the battle honors, also, it is able to handle TGA compression instead of DDS. Thus, from distances it does not have the distracting glimmering effect that is typical with DDS compressions. TGA compressions from a distance have a stable, solid LOOK, and for me, much greater appeal. The downside of TGA compressions is that they tend to have a splotchy look when it comes to shading effects, but this large scaling design seems to have overcome that ugly for the most part, at least with this prototype Mississippi flag.
