Is there a way to mod the height of troops for gameplay purposes?

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Is there a way to mod the height of troops for gameplay purposes?

Post by Garnier »

I believe the game considers troops to be 6ft tall, and the game allows regiments to fire over each other if the elevations are such that regiments in the rear have line of fire. This ignores the fact that lines in the civil war seldom fired over the heads of friendly lines in front of them for a ton of reasons.

Is there a way to mod troops to be, say, 30 ft tall, or anything else? This would prevent situations like the below screenshot where players put a bunch of lines behind each other and all of them get to shoot.

This issue has seen much discussion in recent weeks as many more players learn to exploit the lower slope to stack regiments Against a ridge line or stone walls which under normal circumstances they would not be able to take one regiment on one. It completely negates any terrain bonus the defender might have as the exploiter(may be a little harsh) can apply more pressure at one location that the defender can counter with.

It has even caused a few players to put the game down until fixed.

sadly the blimp in the sky view does not show the slope but does show the stacking used to good effect.

I don't know how this is calculated, so may be way off. Tall troops could solve it, but may not - if they're all taller it may make no difference.

Just a thought.

The difference in elevation needed to allow shoot-over is hard coded. However, you have to remember that the sprites scale to about 12 ft tall, to looks are deceiving.

At one point shooting over worked as it would be expected. But after one of the patches and thereafter the shoot over distance virtually went away. I imagine it is a decimal error. For instance, artillery was to have a shoot over height differential of 20 feet, but now it seems more like 2 ft.
I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

I remember when the firing over icon came up for infantry regiments. Now it is gone. I hope a fix is easy and doable to eliminate the stacking of infantry regiments.

OK, so it can't be modded right now. We hope sometime it will be.

There are more reasons than just trigonometry that lines shouldn't be able to fire over each other. It would be better if they could *never* fire over each other, than what we have now. This shouldn't really happen:

All,

I agree with Brother Garnier on this one. Having friendly fire winging overhead from behind you is disconcerting to say the least. Having it happen unexpectedly is Damn Scary!! Perhaps we should consider having units in the rear never being able to fire.

It would certainly make players think about how they approach the game a little bit more.

I agree that, if adjusting firing over is not possible, disallowing all firing over would be preferable. IF:
a. Troops under AI control would adjust and spread out
b. We were prepared for possible unintended consequences ...
