Prairie Grove 150th

Anyone going?

John, 2nd Texas, and I had discussed doing this event together, then releasing his map with my PG designs on the 7th of December. I'll probably not do it now, a five hour drive through the Ouachita Mountains would be beautiful, but alone (wife's not interested plus won't leave our babies...four dogs) and pushing my old Chevy truck is deterring my decision.

Still, we're making the Prairie Grove release a team effort now, and hopefully it will be released by John's wish date, December 7th, 2012.

Good Grief! Prairie Grove! A lot of memories. We used to attend every one when they were held every other year. Cal Kinzer, and then Bob Serio were the on-site historians in those days. Even did a few days "service" in The Blue & The Gray" when the battle scenes were filmed there.

The only western event I got to during my reenacting career (1981-2008) was Shiloh back a number of years ago. We had a busload of guys and toured Shiloh battlefield before going on to the reenactment (rainy event that was cancelled early) . Word going around is that a lot of the older guys who are still in wool will be considering Gettysburg 150th as their retirement event. Sad to see the hobby winding down.

I don't know that re-enactment ever winds down. New younger people come along to continue it.

Another of my hobbies is model railways and people have been predicting the end of the hobby for 30 years "because soon no-one will be around who remembers steam". Turns out the digital age has completely revitalised the hobby and brought in a whole wave of new younger people and new ideas.

I'm sure re-enacting will carry on as strong as ever as long as people care about their history, which will always be the case.

But that puts you about 12:30 PM, which is 12 and a half hours already into December 7.

Do you think you'll have enough time remaining today to deliver an early Christmas present?

The map is stunning. Beautiful.

Very moody colours. Quite different from the brilliant spring colours of the Chancellorsville map.

And the flags. No cartoon look there.
