Well I just jumped in and downloaded Windows 8. Beautiful operating system. However, SOW games load and start and even play quite well, for a time and then stop. It stops at any time, no specific time during game. Very frustrating. I have tried all the compatability modes to no avail. I have played many games all the way through to conclusion. I then would start another game only to have it stop after a few minutes.
Is anyone working on an app that will let these games play out, or make the games compatable to Windows 8? Can it be done on our part That is on NorbSoftDev's end? Or does this have to be done by Microsoft? Which I'm assuming not, for it wouldn't be in their interest, with their apps store and all. Anyone know if XDA works on Microsoft issues? Probably not. Any how, any help available?

Re: Windows 8 compatability
Well old friend, I've been staring at your message for a while trying to think up a comforting answer concerning your investment. Since no one has weighed in on this, I'm assuming it's a Win 8 issue that will have to be resolved with the inevitable MS service pack.
If it's on SOW's end there should be something of a clue in the SOWGB.log file regarding the crash. Have you checked? ...it's in the Work folder.
Personally, I will avoid Win 8 and stick with Win 7. Win 7 is totally dedicated to the 'gui' architecture which PC gaming is built on, Win 8 is not, having allotted much of it's services and functions to the 'arm' architecture, supporting tablets and the like.
Furthermore, I have been a downright Rebel regarding this cause:

Re: Windows 8 compatability
When the game plays without crashing, is it the first game that was loaded?I have played many games all the way through to conclusion. I then would start another game only to have it stop after a few minutes.
When you start another game, did you exit out of the games menu?
Basically, there was a problem with Windows Vista in the previous game that caused the game to crash if you didn't exit out of the game before starting another one.
Now, I have no idea if this is what is causing the crash, I don't have the Windows 8 System Installed, I'm just trying to read-between-the-lines-here.
Also, as Reb stated above, have you checked the SOWGB.txt file for any possible clues to the crash?
davinci
The only true logic is that, there is no true logic!
Re: Windows 8 compatability
Reb, You are like a lone voice in the wilderness. You and Davinci are the best. Davinci you are right, I restart the game each time from the desktop exe file and the game plays out with out a hitch, so far at least the last 3 games I have played. I think the Win 8 operating system works like a dream for all the bells and whistles it has. I suppose all the bean counters help make the decisions to have open or closed systems. I don't know how much PC gaming's impact is on overall income or outcome. The bottom line is money. Lucky me I have removable hard disks with multiple operating systems. I have Xp,win 7, win 8, and Ubuntu. I have two PC's up and running great. I play every day between picking up kids for school, ice skating, and tutoring. Unfortunately, the mp games are right at dinner time, homework, and evening baths. So this is what I do.
Thanks again for the input.

Re: Windows 8 compatability
I am running it on win8 with no problems. The only thing I had to do was check the win7 compatibility. I don't know if I can help but maybe we can compare settings and hardware and maybe something will jump out.
I recently got a new laptop with 8 already installed. Did you upgrade an existing setup?
I have Nvidia graphics.

Re: Windows 8 compatability
I might as well step in here.
SOW runs fine for me. The rule of thumb for Windows 8 is compatibility set to Windows XP SP3, and give it admin rights. I have several games installed, and so far four of my games (including SOW) require WINxp SP3 with Admin rights.
Also, keep Windows 8 Up to date with all the latest fixes.
Cheers.

Re: Windows 8 compatability
I didn't have your problem, but I had a host of others with Windows 8. I had a series of exchanges with Norb & with Matrix before resolving them. Matrix was much friendlier than I thought they'd be; you should go directly to them & e-mail them for any & all problems regarding the running of the game. I finally have the full game up & running on Windows 8 with no problems whatsoever. It might take time. It took me well over a week to resolve all issues, but the truth is that Windows 8 is compatible with any & all parts of SOW.
