Help me understand....

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Help me understand....

What is the importance of where a mod is in the listing order on the Modification page? Why is above or below another mod important?

One of the great aspects of this game is its built in 'mod manager' which, as you know, allows you to play several mods simultaniously. This is great because you can use a host of mods to fit your preferences.

There might be occasions where there are more than one mod activated which share changes to a particular file or folder. This is especially true when you have mods running that change several aspects of the game, like Bugles and Flags, GCM , Maps and Couriers etc.

You might like aspects of one mod but prefer parts of another.

The order ensures that there is a sequence that the game follows in loading modded files. A similar file will be over ridden by one which is loaded after.

Therefore if I want the flags from 'Bugles and Flags' (which has changes to the GUI files) but want the GUI changes from 'Maps and Couriers' then I would be sure to activate the latter lower in the mod list.

Hope that makes sense

:)

Just to add to that great explanation. Something we did different than we have in the past is that, for example, changes to gfx.csv are not isolated to one mod. Each mod adds to the list. So you can have many mods adding multiple items to the entire list in gfx.csv. The issue comes in when they are both modding the same ID. In this case the order is important, as the last mod will be the last one to write to that specific ID and therefore will take precedence in cases where there is a conflict (ie both try to modify the same ID).

My problem is to understand how to modify the order of the mods.
Newly installed mods get to the end of the list, so, how to move them
up - or put them at a dedicated position in the list?

There are two buttons on the bottom of the left screen. They are up and down buttons. Select the mod you want to use and use the buttons to move it up or down.
I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

So does any one have an order chart available? I guess with so many mods it would be impossible to get a pecken order for lets say Bugles and Flags, which is a must and any other mod before or after that one? May be Michael can spend time on this one???

Certainly appreciate the B&F plug Mr. Boles. :)

Main thing to remember--the last mod to be read, lowest priority, will overwrite any other files above it that use the same ID names.

Something has just occurred to me after a long, long time playing the game.

I have always assumed that the game reads the mods list from the top downwards and that lower mods modified any higher ones.

Is it possible that I an wrong and that it reads the mods list from the bottom upwards ? This thread has just given me doubts.

Someone please confirm where I put the mods that I deem the most desirable. Higher or lower ?

I agree that some guide is becoming necessary regarding which mods don't like each other. Since Norbsoft is only responsible for the basic game, we cannot expect them to do this.

I think I will have a go at a mega-spreadsheet showing exactly which .csv fields are changed by which mods. I do hope that most mod writers have included in their folders only those .csv files that have actually been modified and do not send unmodified .csv files along just for the ride. A responsible modder would not do this of course , if only to keep the mod download size to a minimum.

Comments welcome.

Your original thought was correct, they are read top down, the bottom ones can overwrite the top ones.
