Does anyone know of a GREAT World War 2 Flight Sim that is not IL2?
Hi guys.
I am wondering if there are any good ww2 or even current flight combat sims that is not IL2 related? I already own IL2, and have played that to death.
So far what does come up does not look all that interesting. I do know that there is an addon of sorts for IL2 (I think) called "Cliffs of Dover" but I very rarely purchase addons.
I am looking for a brand new spanking edition that is not tied to any game made.
Thanks!

Battle of Britain 2.
This is, IIRC, an old game that is now kept alive by modders. I played quite a bit until Antietam drew me back to ACW.
It is a brilliant flight sim of the Battle of Britain period. I used to play on newbie settings. On realistic settings I found it impossible to take off in a Spitfire. There is an even more complicated setting in which you have to use cockpit controls to get the engine going ...
It is incredibly detailed and well researched.
Let me know if you find it and get it.

When PC Gamer Magazine named its 2012 Top 100 PC Games list, the entry for number 37 read, "Steel Fury gave me an inkling of what it was like to command a T-34 on the Eastern Front. Silent Hunter III thrust me into the dank, claustrophobic world of a U-boat captain. But only one game, thus far, has given me an idea of what life was like for those 1940 RAF pilots, who, emerging from cloud cover, found themselves gazing at a firmament teeming with Luftwaffe planes."
I agree. It's the closest I'll ever get to flying a Spitfire, as my father did (just post-BoB). One of his old airfields, about 10 miles from our house in London, is actually in the game, so I would sometimes 'fly' over London and head back to his airfield and land!
Writing this is tempting me to dig the game and joystick out again ...
2nd edit (you've got me interested again, Mike ...)

Thanks Blaugrana, I'll be taking a look at it. Much to read, and so far it looks pretty cool. Oh one more thing, I think it is so cool that the game has the airstrip you mentioned.
Oh, give this a listen, and it just might give you that yearning to hop back in. It's one of my most beloved songs from WW2.
I really think the best music was written during World War 2.

Thanks, Mike.
I've been reading up on flight sims since I replied to your OP, and there seems to be a lot around. Looks like there are some great add-ons which transform the originals... .???
This looks like a good source of info:

TTFN (as Vera Lynn might say)

Thanks Blaugrana. I'm now watching all the videos I can lay my hands on for Battle of Britain II, and so far it reminds me of a game I played so many years ago (which is very good). It's sells for $19.99 (not bad at all). I'll let you know when I do get it installed. I am eager to give this a try.Thanks, Mike.

Thanks Again Blaugrana... and I'm sure Vera Lynn would agree with the TTFN.

Cliffs of Dover isn't an add-on, it's a completely new game - the next generation of IL2. Like SOW after TC2M.

Mike/All,
Do not buy Cliffs of Dover. It blows big time. Again, wildly over-hyped. The lads from IL2 did not do a great job on this one. I was really looking forward to this. (I fly a BF-109E or 109G-2 in IL2). Wanted to fly against the RAF in a better game. (Sorry guys, but my great uncle on my mothers side was Adolf Galland, one of Germany's highest scoring Aces. BTW, I am NOT him. I get shot down regularly.) If you check the gamesite forums you'll get the drift about it. A heavily upgraded IL2 is STILL the better game.

@Jack,
It seems that Cliffs of Dover is now playable, after patches etc.
Given your connection to Galland, you might be interested in a 3rd party add-on:

@Mike,
BoB2 was brilliant when I played it a year ago and it seems a new patch has just come out, adding even greater realism and detail. I am going to have to try the new version, though it may involve a new PC...

I was doing some reading about Cliffs Over Dover, and the nightmarish bug count was mind boggling. It's good to hear that they finally were able to squash those nasty CTD bugs.@Jack,

As far as BOBII, I like it. The graphics are a bit dated, but I'm not the type that relies on graphics alone for good gameplay. I did buy it after reading up on it, and it runs fine on my system. I just have to muck around a bit to see what I can do with it. So far it's looks pretty cool. I shall get back to you on it, and thank you Blaugrana for the pointing me too it.

Cheerio Matey!
