Strange formation at column rest
Strange formation at column rest
What causes this? In SP, this is how the brigades in my game halt in column formation after a road march. AI brigades do it too, AFAICT. I'm using some mods like Rebugler's bugles and flags and DRF as well as a terrain mod, but this has occurred before those mods were installed.
Thanks

Weird,
Are you using the toolbar? Looks like there is no formation specified and they all just converge on the destination by brigade once they leave the road.
If you are using courier orders, maybe you're specifying a brigade march column formation for a division, or vice-versa.

As far as I know - only the drills.csv file can cause that!

Disable all mods, then re-enable them one by one until the problem occurs. I would think if it was an issue with Reb's toolbar, it would have been noticed before. So I have a feeling it's a mod conflict, but won't know for sure unless you narrow it down.

Re: Strange formation at column rest
That effect is caused when no formation is specified when giving courier orders. The orders to give are:
1. go to a location
2. face a certain direction
3. assume a formation upon arrival
4. assume a stance (not required but recommended)
5. use roads (if necessary)
Keep them in that order.

I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

Looks like you're using the Marching Band Halftime Show mod.

Re: Strange formation at column rest
There is an infrequent bug that is related to this. I know it shows up in courier play, so maybe it also exists when playing without them. March a formation to some location, giving them a formation to assume upon arrival. While they are marching there, change the formation to a different one. At times, one or two of the regiments will form on top of the commander, in a formation that they were told to change. Example, the original brigade formation is double line. While marching, it is changed to march column. When the regiments arrive, one and possibly two will form on top of the brigadier. One regiment will be in line formation while another will be in column formation. As I said, it is rare, but it does happen.

Re: Strange formation at column rest
I've seen this formation caused by the Supply Wagon. If the troops are in column formation on a road and the wagon passes them, they'll resupply and "go to" where the Commanding Officer is and adjust themselves accordingly so that to "column up" at the Officer.
Just as they "go to" the Officer when they resupply on the field.

Thanks for the helpful replies. I've been traveling a lot for the last two weeks and haven't kept up on the forums. I will try the suggestions (disabling all mods). The above effect typically occurs when a division commander is given a direct command to go to to a spot on the map and halt in column. If ordered to deploy in double line or line, they form normally.
Congratulations to JC Edwards! It is the supply wagon, or actually the regimental commanders' lack of discipline when food/ammo is nearby. I watched the deployment more closely (as I should have before posting). Halting after a short road march, the brigades formed column formations beautifully, then things transpired just as JC described.

When the AI gives a division an order to move to a new location, (the very 1st move order is always OK), it never gives a formation order. So what you see at that location are all the units piled on top of one another. The 1st order always generates a large black square on the map and the brigades are deployed in that area. With subsequent orders, the small red box with cross-hairs is displayed for the division's new location and all the units move to one point.
