Erratic cavalry behavior

Post by Col. Patton »

Playing the excellent Gettysburg 3 day scenario and finally got to use cavalry on day 3. I notice erratic behavior. I move Reb cavalry up to charge yankee cavalry, take command, press change and nothing happens, Rebs don't move. I move Reb cavalry up to charge Yankee infantry, take command, change and no movement. I try ordering Reb cavalry to move through yankee infantry line, thinking that they will attack and instead, the Rebs move through the Yankees as though they were not there. In a few occasions, the Yankee infantry then begins firing at the Reb cavalry after they have moved through them. If I move up Reb infantry and charge this same Yankee infantry, the Reb infantry will charge. If I move up Reb infantry to charge Yankee cavalry unit that has been sitting still with Reb units moving through and around it, sometimes the Reb infantry will charge the Yankee unit and scatter it. Some of this erratic behavior has taken place on Wolf Hill, so somewhat rough terrain, but some has not.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for playing, haven't had any feedback for a while on these scenarios.

Watch your fatigue level, fatigued troops won't charge. Also, low level troops, Militia etc., won't cooperate well. Don't TC regiments to charge, I think some folks do this but I have found it ineffective with my playing experiences. Opposing units should never touch, they may not charge due to fatigue but will at least melee. If they do happen to overlap your game may be maxing out--too much load. Try setting back some options to compensate and see if this helps...Medium distance visibility, less trees, etc.

Thanks for the Report

Edit: Please try out the latest Beta patch, 1.6. Erratic cavalry behavior has been tested and addressed in several areas...see if this patch helps.

Thanks for reply. I am seeing quite a bit of lag, so will try to reduce load. Does terrain affect cav ability to charge?

Terrain will affect visibility, so in a manner of speaking, yes, because the auto charge distance, 125 yards, will be affected.

Pat,

Yes. Cavalry cannot charge thru woods. Also, Terrain affects line of sight. The Horsemen may not be able to see the troops you wish them to charge. Even though you can see them, there may be a slight dip or hill in the ground between them.
