Can we have brighter skies?

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Can we have brighter skies?

Post by Trilogy »

I know it was overcast at Gettysburg, but I'm always struck by the darkness of the sky in the game. Clouds are fine, but the blue that can be seen between them is too dark, almost like dusk even in midday scenarios.

Is there a way to brighten up the sky?

Check out the SDK \ Maps - and look for the configuration file that is associated with the Map that you are playing on.

Something such as...2_DD_RT - for the LRT Map.

If, I remember correctly - you can alter the sky with these settings.

I really don't remember exactly how, so play around with the part that is displayed below.

Note : After you alter the configuration file, it must be placed in the Mod \ Map - folder to take effect.

Jack - had a topic on this roughly sixteen months ago if you can find it.

;Sky
;SkyCubeR=192
;SkyCubeG=192
;SkyCubeB=192
;SkyCubeR=45
;SkyCubeG=45
;SkyCubeB=45
SkyAlpha=255
SkyPlaneR=146
SkyPlaneG=147
SkyPlaneB=162
SkyPlaneHeight=500

The only true logic is that, there is no true logic!

I'd love to see whatever info you have.

I just get the impression that the blue of the sky is too deep, giving a near-sunset impression even in the middle of the day. July in Pennsylvania is bright.

T,

Here's how it works in a nutshell - The Skyplane items DaV has listed are the beginnng. The numbers there are the color determniing factors. Bottom line - the lower the numbers, the lighter the sky. It will take time, but, with trial and error, you can lighten up the sky however you wish. The numbers DaV has listed are the direction we went to create what is now known as the FogMod. It works beautifully if you want to fight by "Earshot." You can hear the enemy, just not see them until they are literally right on top of you. :laugh:

Always make copies of the originals before you start and stash them somewhere, just in case.

Give it a shot. Yes, Pennsylvania is quite bright in the daytime. Give a shout if you need help.

Thanks! I'll give it some work when I have time.

Let's assume (because it's true) that I know *nothing* about modding SoW. I know I should look in the SDK, but which files will be involved, and where do I put them when I'm ready to test changes?

Thanks again.

T,

You'll go to the SDK folder, then into the Maps folder. In the Maps Folder there are 2 files for each Map, a .csv file and a .ini file. The .ini file is the one you want. These are the original, or stock files. There are others in the Base/Maps Folders, but you don't need to worry about those. Pick any of the .ini files and open it. As you scroll down you will see the numbers areas we are talking about. I have posted an example from the Kansas.ini file from the FogMod. There are some lines you may have to add , but essentially you'll just change a few of the numbers, but it WILL be trial and error. Remember to use a copy, not the original, when you start changing stuff. Later, you'll want to put all the changes in a Folder to add it to the MODS section.

Keep us posted. We are here to help.

Okay, this sucks - For some reason I cannot attach the Kansas KS.ini file to this post. First time for that. Will keep fiddling here and see what is wrong. Great - another mystery. Grrrr....

Try this, unzip into your Mods folder, edit ini files with Notepad. More questions...just ask, this should at least get you started, attached...

The attachment SkyMod.zip is no longer available

Hmmm? Well, I edited these three lines and nada...no difference.

SkyPlaneR=167
SkyPlaneG=221
SkyPlaneB=255

The setup I provided should work, but other than that I'm miffed. Someone else will have to take it from here.
