Open Play Question?

Post by Davinci »

Hey, I’m wondering if anyone has ever beaten the AI in Open Play!

I have a very good Open Play game going at the moment, the battle line has expanded to roughly five miles, the longest battle line I’ve ever played with.

I always play without objectives so that I never know where the enemy will concentrate his forces.

The Union forces are very relentless in trying to destroy my army, and have inflicted roughly five thousand casualties out of my fifty-nine-thousand army.

But, looking at the battle I’ve come to the conclusion that there is no way that I’m ever going to destroy them without destroying my army in the process.

So, this brings me to my question – has anyone ever destroyed the enemy army in Open Play?

Yes, many times. If playing with the Goodyear blimp view, instant communications, everyone TC'd and employing 20th century armor tactics, it's not too difficult. The player can run up enormous scores that way. Playing HITS, it also can be done, but it is usually a Pyrrhic victory. In corps level games and above, it's possible to inflict 1-3000 more casualties, (not points), on the AI. Once that difference level is reached, the players troops are worn out and shot up so that casualties are traded 1 for one from that point onward. Since the AI does not know when it is beat, it will fight to the last man. Highly unrealistic. I usually stop the game when I am that far ahead and have tactical superiority on the field. I also stop the game when I am that far behind and have no reserves left. :)
I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

Yes, many times.
Hmm, out of the hundreds of games that I have played, I don't think that I have ever beaten the AI in a Open Play game.

It sort of reminds me of when I was reading about General Lee trying to destroy the Army of the Potomac and while playing I have come to the conclusion that that is impossible.

The only way to destroy their army is to destroy yourself in the process.

This game really does need a night cycle to have the ability of redeploying!
