How to win defense games

Post by Chortle »

My defense games come to a decision (I can see how it is going) but never complete. I wonder what I'm doing wrong. At some point during the defense, I sit a commander on the objective and keep the required number of troops there. But the game never registers that I control the objective. To make matters simple, I went for a single objective. What am I doing wrong? Must I start with a commander on the objective? Do I lose my chance after a certain time?

I am playing SOW using the Napoleonic mod. I play in the sandbox.

I can't answer for sure for the Nap mod but assuming that you CAN hold the objective (in scenarios some OBJs are Union or Confederate only - it will say on the map if you hover the cursor over it) you have to have a required number of troops there. Hover the cursor over the OBJ on the map to find out how many. If the enemy are close they could be contesting it with you, meaning you need even more men there.

Once you have met all the requirements the flag over the OBJ will change to the flag of your side, and a timer will start counting down. In certain cases, when the timer is up the OBJ dissapears.

How do I set up my sandbox games so that my "team" can actually hold the objective(s) in a game I select as a defense? I had hoped that would be automatic.

I have noticed that the objective is often listed as "Union". The enemy has no trouble taking the objective. But I can sit on it with a division, with the enemy miles away, and not have it under my control. It stays neutral.

It's designed that way because the maps are so big.

If both sides were allowed to rack up points for occupying an OBJ, imagine how many the defender (you, who spawns right beside it) would have before the attacker gets there? If you want a free for all - use 'hunt them down' as the game type. It allows you to specify more OBJ's :)

I wrongly assumed that the scenario would either end after a time, or allow the defender to claim the objective after a time and end this way. Shows that assumption makes an ass out of you!(or me in this case)

So I guess I have to simply end the scenario myself when it seems the enemy are exhausted. I guess this also means that I have to defeat the enemy while scoring higher than him.

I will check out hunt-them-down objectives. Thank you.

I cant remember off the top of my head what defines a win on a Defend sandbox, but you could set a time for the length of the battle in the setup screen, or a lowscore that is achievable through battle casualties alone. The timer is ptobably most realistic - defend until 6pm, etc. Dont set it too short or it will end when the fighting is just getting started :)

Hunt them down is how I play, each OBJ (major and minor) is up for grabs and both armies manouvering freely.
