Take Charge - Multiplayer

Post by Harag »

Hi

Apologies for the newbie type questions as I've only just started playing gettysburg in multiplayer with my brother.

We are currently playing through the scenarios and on GB 04 - where there is 2 division commanders, 1 with 3 Brigs and the other just artillery. If I take the division commander of the 3 brigs and my bro takes the corps commander is there anyway he can control the artillery AND take over one of my brigades so I only have the div commander and 2 of the brigs, and he has the 3rd brig.

Thanks.

Nope, not easily anyway. I play Corps level all the time, if you have a human div commander, you as the Corps commander will not have easy control over any of his troops, all orders will have to be sent thru the courier system.

It can be done, but it is a huge pain to do it.

Thanks for the reply. After quite a bit of playing around I came to the same conclusion to use couriers but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

Another question I have along the similar lines.

Say I control a Brigade with several regiments in it, and my brother controls the div commander or corp commander. He sent me a courier message to go defend location XYZ. As I was reading the message I noticed that all my regiments started moving and heading in that direction.

But since I control the Brig commander - why were my regiments following his orders? is the only way to stop this is to take charge of each of the regiments. Now if you scale this up and he was the corp commander and I controlled the div commander, then again would I need to take charge of all the brig commanders under me, and then all the regiment commanders ?

Still not sure how all this fully works as I was surprised my regiments under my commanded followed his orders.

Thanks

You need to set your MP options to Couriers by Brigade level. That should prevent your guys from getting auto orders from higher command. But I also think you could set Div level and your brigade commanders should do nothing until you order them. I use Brigade level for max realism when we play.

Once you set that, he (Corp Commander) can issue orders to you, you will then have to issue orders to EACH brigade commander and artillery commander for them to do anything basically. You can also use the double click method on a brigade commander and such, but nothing will occur until your AI generated courier arrives. So expect a delay.

I mainly play Corps and Army Command now so my lower (div level) command is rusty.

If you are a division commander with a human player in charge of one of your brigades, it's best to avoid using the command map to give orders to the rest of the division. This is because of the effect Harag mentions. The orders do to every regiment and battery, bypassing the (human) chain of command.

If you want to order the AI controlled units, here are 2 suggestions:

1. Issue orders (by command map if you like) to each AI brigade/battery individually

2. Detach the human-controlled brigade at the beginning of the game. This may allow your brother to use his current method ok. NB this is a theory - haven't tried it :)

Hope that helps
