Bugles & Flags XIX

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Aucommon???

hey reb...sorry, but NOT ALL veteran MP know about this stuff...I've been playing since v1 TCM and up to SOW Anniv Ed, and I don't auto-know these things...and I play SOW 1-2-3 times a week, always "hosting" (because i'm the only one with Win8), and so a lot of what "flys-by" here is close to Greek for me...BUT...I pay attention, follow the instructions, and am having a blast with all that you guys are "adding to" the game (we have solid 2-3-4 players always ready to try a new scenario)...so please, when you guys can, speak "English"!! :-)
OK, I assumed too much...and as Steve Martin put it: "WELL Excusssse Me" :P

One anomaly I see with the C&M mod is with the level 6 infantry line formations, this right quarter offset line placement as seen below. I've studied the formation and can't figure out what's causing it. Maybe MTG can weigh in on this.
With version 1.6, formations became slightly less rigid than in the past. You will also notice concave lines at times. When moving sideways in line formations, the line will sometimes move parallel to its path rather than perpendicular to it. That is a nice feature and much more realistic than the normal behavior of rotating the entire line 90 degrees and then marching off.

If you played at ground level rather than from your sissified helicopter, you'd never see that misalignment in the picture.
Yeah, us "sissified helicopter" type folks (I prefer drone pilots) are not too keen on being impaled on the saddle :P ...each to their own. ;)

Found that anomaly cause:

...repeated 66 being the culprit

Think I'll correct this and test it out, maybe pass it along if it proves a good fix for the 'conga line effect', and doesn't mess with other stuff.

Edit: Fixed the anomaly. Post #273 updated with this fix, infantry level 6 formations line and line fight edited (from MTG's Couriers & Maps mod):

Reb

We've played a couple of the 3 hr scenarios with the "Maximum Toolbar" and didn't have a single crash. So we switch to the B&F Toolbar, and within 30 minutes we had a crash, we did this a couple of times and same result. Looks like the toolbar is causing the crashes on Win 8 machines. On another thread I found here about win 8 and compatibility someone mentioned running a scan on the store for corrupted files, we did this and found none.

Sorry not sure how else to test the toolbar, any suggestions?

I didn't suffer any crashes from B&F XIV but I did notice occasional/repeated screen freezes---screen would freeze up for a few seconds and then unfreeze. It was annoying.

I just unclicked B&F XIV and went back to using XIII.

Have not noticed the same thing with XIII.

v13? What is the difference between that and v14? where can I get v13 from? would like to try v13 to see how it works in multiplayer.

I don't think trying v13 will help the cause because the 'toolbar only' version striped the main difference between versions 13 and 14, that is, how the flags are set up.

Harag, you asked how to help test for solutions here, so if you have the time try the B&F Toolbar version again with the bugle calls removed. Do this by clearing column 'G' in the gui.csv file (careful not to delete the column). The rationale here is that maybe Win8 has issues with large Wave files, as some of the bugle calls are over a Mb in size, the stock versions being much smaller.
Edit: Went ahead and fixed the gui as proposed above, this attached version will have to be renamed "gui" and will overwrite the previous version in the Logistics folder, B&F Toolbar:
The attachment gui_2014-08-15.csv is no longer available

Thanks everyone for your recent reports here, hopefully a cure for this Win8 MP bug with B&F will be found.

Also, with chijohnaok's report it looks like 8K packing may be more troublesome than anticipated, and not worth the transition...time and negative reports will tell. Thanks...

Thanks for the new GUI, we'll give that a go for you. Apologies, but I'm not a modder so not sure on the file layouts. I'll report back when we've tested it.

Hi,

as you can see the time between the last post and this is just over 2 hours. We played a 3hr battle with the suggestion you made above and it did in fact play much longer than before. so some great improvement, however we did crash just after 2 hours. I had just opened up the OOB to go view some units.

Note we didn't have ANY trumpet sounds at all, were we suppose to have?

Note, I have two monitors and on the 2nd monitor I have steam chat open, I had just switched to the chat window this time when it crashed, could that be another cause?

We'll play some more with out the trumpet sounds and let you know.
