Cavalry vs Squares

Post by james l henry »

Hi

Its been many years since I was involved on this board. I look forward to the release of this game

First an observation:

In the Breakaway games cavalry versus square was (imo) handled badly in that, if the cavalry had been given a charge order and the infantry had formed square prior to contact, the cavalry unit would become almost useless, as it would crash into the square. In reality no horse would throw itself on to a prickly hedge of bayonets. Yes, some riders/horses would be shot but would that really mean the unit was useless?

So I wonder how your game handles cavalry vs square?

The cavalry stops always the charge against a square also if ordered from the player, only TCing, it can. If the cavalryis not near to avoid contact, it retreats (after have receiving a lot of damage).

AI cavalry performs very well around squares - Mitra did an excellent job.

Is there any chance/check that a square might be broken by cav? It was rare, but it did happen. Fresh heavy cavalry vs a tired/shaken up militia for example.

If squares failed their morale checks (fallback or retreat) they broke the formation and try to retreat.

A video on YouTube of this happening (both secure well formed square and a shaky square) would be great to see, and would be a very good way to sell one of the most significant features of the new game. I was disappointed that the Matrix video didn't show this.
