In your game Options you can set how much Information your map should show.
This goes from...
"Bare Map" (only your own position and nothing else), to
"All Units" (all your own units and all enemy units)
You can also set that you can see all your own units and those enemy units that are visible to your troops.
If you need to know about the battle situation of a unit you can...
- scroll to the unit and observe yourself
- select an officer or unit (I browse the OOB with the arrow keys) and look at #men, #casualities and score in the toolbar to have an idea how well they are doing. Is the score going up? Then you inflict more casualties then you take.
- in the toolbar you can also see if a Regiment is engaged/moving/resting.
- depending on your courier settings, your AI subordinates will inform you if they have seen/engaged the enemy and if they are in serious trouble.
