Let's talk about the issues in converting the SOW engine to handle Waterloo. Ideas, suggestions, feature requests, comments.

So you guys would be happier with 2D NATO style symbols instead of sprites?
Let me tell you if this had no visual representation I would have zero interest. There are plenty of stale wargames like that around. They have no impact and everything is so under the hood you have no emotional attachment or indicator as to what is actually going on.

I didn't say that, they do give a great visual feel, but it is mostly visual.

Units do shrink if they get enough of a beating. But its not like total war. Unless the unit gets fired on by 3-4 others at close range, it will normaly last a long time. Units do not get destroyed, you dont kill 90% of a unit. If you take care of a unit that routs, give it time it can come back strong, a unit willl have to to be routed sevral times or face something catastrophic to get taken out foe good.

Destraex,

Many of us, I am sure, would like a game which allows us to fight actions in 1:1 sprite ratio. It would be great to see battalions change formation with their companies wheeling, about facing or deploying as skirmishers just like they did on the parade ground or in battle. I for one would like to fight an action like the 95th Rifle's defence of the sandpit at Waterloo or the Guard retaking of Plancenoit.

However, to accurately portray this, you would need a game engine that is much more complex and heavy on calculation. A new engine for small scale tactics and manouvre would be needed IMO.

Most napoleonic gamers, I expect, are wanting to command formations from brigade up in battles which are of bigger scale. Our imaginations allow us to discount the fact that battalions were actually much bigger and that the sprites don't actually look like real people or horses.

200 sprite max will do nicely for me and, as a HITS player, I quite welcome not having to ride 10 minutes just to get from one end of my division to the other.

This is a screenshot from the SOWGB Nap mod showing battalions with about 120 sprites each. The new Waterloo game will allow up to 200 sprites for large battalions.

Hey Destraex.

Here is an idea for you to consider.

Why don't you buy a copy of Waterloo when it is released and play it for awhile before criticizing the game?

Hold your fire, or as infantry NCOs probably said at the time, "Wait for it."

conjotter. Am I not dealing with facts?
I do like your idea of spending $50 ($60-$70 au dollars) on a game just to try it to see if I like it though.

As they say in units in my neck of the woods "don't get ahead of me!". "Wait for the my command before buying!"

I am NOT attacking the game conjotter so please don't get all fan boy on me. I am simply trying to decide whether I can live with the limitations before buying. I will not do things arse about by purchasing and then deciding I don't like it. This is the whole reason I have downloaded the Gettysburg demo to try.

Destraex, have you thought about downloading the gettysburg demo, it will give you an idea about what a sow game is, it will also show you have units behave with different sprite ratios, ect. I assume you havnt played any of the sow games since you didn't know units used the real number of soldiers in its calculations ect.

gunfreak I was on of the first to own take commande second man... I still have the original poster and goodies.
I have also downloaded the gettysburg demo as per above to see if I like it. I had already had it installed but ACW is not my favourite genre combined with the fact I had no friends willing to try a game such as it kind of stalled my purchase of it. Much more excited about this and hope it is successful.

Hi Destraex

if you end up buying the game and would like to try multiplayer, please pm me as we have a group of SOW players in Australia who play it regularly in the evenings and are always looking for new players. We are all napoleonic nuts so we will be playing Waterloo.

cheers

Certainly. How many of you are there and how regular do you play. Also what is the average game time and allocation you have to set aside for your meets? I PC game regularly with a bunch of 8 or so mates on skype.

4 of us at present, play every 2-3 weeks currently (but suspect this will be more often now that Waterloo is here), purely SOW and mods. Mostly we play 2 hr games but can go longer (eg 8.30pm-11pm ACST). We have our own dedicated voice server.
